2008-03-05 08:59:00 | I have built a new pc but am using an older hard drive as i dont have a biger one and a little short on cash. i also dont have an XP installation disc as i dont have the money. will my old installation of xp work with the new motherboard? I have the Drivers on a CD-RW from the manfactorers website as i lost the proper cd. if the old xp installation wont work is there a way to install the drivers from the boot menu? | fatesjester (13456) | |

2008-03-05 09:51:00 | Will the Old Hard Drive still work in the Old PC, or is the Old PC dead ?? If it is still working, download Magicaljellybean (www.magicaljellybean.com) run it and it will tell you what the installed Key is. Then as CYaBro said, borrow a Windows XP CD from someone and do a repair install or a complete new install. The repair install will still need the product key entered. Note: you may need to phone MS and tell them the boards been replaced if it wont activate. Depending on the difference in Motherboards, it may, if your lucky boot and then remove old drivers and install the new - old saying " suck it and see" the worst it should do is try to boot and blue screen then reboot again over and over. Replaced a MB two weeks ago totally different boards / chipsets for a customer, and I wasn't fast enough to press any key to boot from CD - thought it would need a repair install - damn thing booted first time & didn't need to be reactivated - you never know sometimes. | 646640 | 2008-03-05 10:01:00 | Cant Belarc tell you the key to XP as well? Sure will- if you can get the PC to a bootable / windows state. | wainuitech (129) | |
2008-03-05 22:10:00 | you can also load the registry hive using another PC and decrypt your product key www.dagondesign.com Once you get the key, try booting, if it just freezes or BSOD then you could reinstall or repair from a borrowed CD and using your key if not then you don't need to worry :D

2008-03-06 00:13:00 | if i installed 2000 pro over the hard drive, will it recognize my motherbaord and are there any downsides for 2000 over xp for example gaming? | fatesjester (13456) | |
2008-03-06 00:17:00 | It probably wont let you install 2k over XP. You'll have to do a clean install, then install the mobo drivers, then the other drivers (video/LAN/sound). You'll have to re-download the above, if the drivers you've got now arent for 2000. Depends if the game (and how recent the game is), on whether it will work on 2000. Not all do now. Read the system requirements before you buy the game.
