339077 2005-03-29 00:31:00 I'm all for a nuclear power plant.

Well I'll be darned. Metla actually agreeing with me??!! :D

BTW, I was in Wanganui the other weekend. Was going to put a note on your computer shop door but there is more than one such shop! Haven't been in Wanganui for yonks - what a nice place!

Abetter solution. Candles!!!

And the Waikato farmers probably care as much for Aucklanders as the Auks. do for them.

339079 2005-03-29 02:32:00 I am willing to put money on this thread, that concensus will never be achieved.

While the demand for electricity in Auckland is increasing, so is the population base, as well as the manufacturing/industrial base. I also suspect that in other regions of the country which have a sizeable population and manufacturing/industrial base that their demand is proportionally increasing as well. From previous articles I have read, I understand that greater than 60% of the nation's useage is by the manufacturing/industrial base.

So for all those who live outside of Auckland, how about providing some ready facts on what is happening in your area in terms of changes in electricty demand rather than assuming (which seems to be the case in a good many of the previous responses) that the problem is only an Auckland one.

And one final thought to ponder .... it will be too late to wonder what to do next when the lights finally go out!

I'll agree with that. But if we all agree it wouldn't be a very interesting discussion.

The problem may be widespread as you suggest, but , as usual Auckland is the only one complaining.
And the pylons are only going to Auckland.

Consensus? Sure! I think we all agree that the farmers are wasting their time protesting, that we will eventually go nuclear (at least Metla and I agree so the rest of you don't matter :p ), that solar cells don't have the amps, that wind will only give us around 10% tops, that the general population will only care when their electricity gets cut, that power pylons are ugly but necessary, that Jafa's are power gluts and traffic mad, and if we do get brown or blackouts that we can always drag in our car batteries or laptops to power us for more PF1 stuff! :D

339083 2005-03-29 03:20:00 FWIW...

The French have better looking pylons:

Japanese and Tasmanians = Waikato farmers:

"Many years ago, I flew into Japan on a business trip at a time when -- improbable as this sounds now, in retrospect -- the Japanese Self-Defence Force had to defend Haneda airport with tanks and machine guns from furious local farmers who were opposed to the airport's expansion. Prior to this, I had always thought farmers were a pretty stolid, and staunchly conservative lot. Clearly not so down here, either, where many locals remain firmly opposed to BassLink, a British consortium that wants to bring an overhead power line ashore from Tasmania."

Yes and no.
The closer the supply is to the demand, the less the losses are. Taranaki is close to Wellington, and a lot closer to AK then say Benmore. (lower south island) Producing a big chunk of power in the North Island may not remove the bottleneck in piping it to AK, but it will reduce the overall losses so we can live with that bottleneck a wee bit longer. Most of the pylons needed allready exist, and are pointing in the right directions.

Good luck .... and so simple ... you just need to convince the green brigade and those so politically correct boffuns in the round-house on the hill in Wellington. I guess the other group that you will need to win over is the NIMBY one .... . probably likely to be members of the same group who dont want the pylons! Mind you, if it was likely to be nuclear in my backyard, I would be joining them as well. :D

And here i am pushing for one in Taranaki, where my family live..... I dont want my parents to live their final days with candles and no means of transport (assuming we have electric cars, guess where the power will come from?)

I'd just like to point out that this is entirely seperate from the nukes@our ports debate, where it seems to me far more about keeping NZ non supportive of the nuclear arms race, and therefore has no connection@all with the powering our lights debate.
