2005-03-28 12:03:00 | well boys will always be boys. it hasn't changed, we had "boy racers" years ago and we still have em. only problem is there is more poulation which mean more boy racers, more traffic for them to run into and the roads are still the same. one big difference today is that fast cars are cheap to buy and the cars are better than the drivers so the driveing habits can be worse because the car will do a lot of it instead of the driver learning how to do it. i had someone suggest they should ban under 20 or 25 (for eg) from having fast cars. however even grandmas shopping trolly will do high speed (my own 4 door front wheel drive carby fed 1800cc shopping trollel can do 200km/h). best thing.....limit them to driveing DEISELS ! ;)

2005-03-28 12:15:00 | I have no idea of the official figures, they might exist somewhere with the Dept. of Statistics, but I suspect that the road toll generally is lower now than in the past. However, deaths from vehicle crashes is still a major contributor to premature death. If this is so, then why not institute driver education in secondary schools? Surely the prevention of unecessary death, suffering and financial loss is a worthwhile subject to be taught to our children? It could be easily incorporated into that dodgy subject "Social Studies". I am sure it would have some use for all student, in contrast with some subjects that I was forced to learn (Latin, Maori Studies, Social Studies, Bible Studies, most of English...).

2005-03-28 12:23:00 | not a bad idea. i don't know if this is still being done but my first lot of driver training was done by the AA via the schools (free too). personally i think schools are fast becoming parents for kids whose parents don't have time or cannot be bothered teaching their kids the basics of life. where do you draw the line? whats more important, teaching kids how to swim or how to drive? (someone mentioed that the local school no longer teaches kids how to swim which really sucks).

I wouldn't bother drawing a line, seeing as so many parents are incompetent or downright dangerous in bringing up their children . If that means these poor parents abrogate their child-rearing responsibilities to the state, then it would be a good thing . |

2005-03-28 21:14:00 | Having progressed to car driving via the route of bicycle and motorbike, motorbike and sidecar as family came along ( a 'Carmobile' 4 seater sidecar  ), I used to think then, and still do, that having to qualify for a motorcycle license and ride one for a year before being able to drive a car, would produce much better car drivers. On a bike one has a much better feeling for the road conditions, better vision, appreciation of road surfaces (occasionally a very close appreciation), a feeling of vulnerability that tends to induce greater care. There are usually no passengers to show off to, (never really agreed with pillion passengers being allowed). There there is the survival factor, motorbiking will weed out the true hoons by an evolutionary process of survival of the most careful

2005-03-29 12:33:00 | I also think the driving instruction isn't good enough. I was in the passenger seat of my sons car, approaching a roundabout, he put his left indicator on & drove straight accross the roundabout & took the 2nd exit off. What the $%^&^%$#@@! are you doing I yelled. People abusing us as we passed in front of them & he's oblivious to it all. He asked what's wrong? I had to teach him how to use a roundabout as the instructor hadn't shown him & there wasn't any on his test course. He wasn't taught how to corner at speed, as I found out after being thrown from side to side, Basically he'd been shown how to sit in the Auckland traffic, even down to the manouvre, indicate & look routine. (The last 2 being optional) I didn't want him dead in a ditch somewhere & took him around & showed him how to drive, not just pass his test. He couldn't even reverse into a parking space without multiple back & forth manouvres. When my 2nd son wanted to drive I grilled the instructor & took him out myself as well. The reason I didn't take the oldest out is I thought I had too many bad habits & didn't want to pass them on. We made both of them wait until they were 17. The youngest one has had a few fines, nothing major. They're both still here & judging by the way they now drive, should be here for a long long time.

2005-04-06 08:15:00 | Never mind the young male driver . What about the rest of the drivers on the road . Had to vent this . . . I've just got home, luckily in one piece having witnessed 3 separate instances of some of the worst driving I've ever seen . 1) Young female driver with similalr aged blokes in car . Persistently tailgating me (ie less than one car length) at 100km/h . Wouldn't overtake because of oncoming traffic . In the end I just ended up slowing down as there was nowhere to stop and pull over . 2) Car pulling right out of junction (didn't identify the driver) in front of mainstream traffic doing 80-100km/h! They ended up stopping in the middle of the road when they realised their mistake . The first car slowed down for them, almost stopping, but the 2nd car had no intention of slowing down having not anticipated what was going on in front of them . Almost causing a massive pile-up as they swerved into the path of oncoming traffic to avoid a collision . 3) Older male driver (~50, greasy looking Italian-style bloke) thought he would try and shave a nanosecond off his journey by overtaking me on double yellow lines, round a blind right-hander with half his car on the opposite side of the road as he was going round the corner . Bloody lucky nothing else was coming cos it would have been curtains . He then sped off at 100 (in a 70k zone), only to slam his brakes on for a slow car (doing the limit) towing a trailer . I ended up catching up with him at a roundabout and passed him in the right lane! He ended up dropping into Super Liquor and the TAB (maybe he was rushing to put a bet on?) . I called *555 and ended up being put on hold for 5 minutes before speaking to anyone . *** - please can anyone explain what posseses these completely insane morons to risk life and limb (not to mention everyone else's safety) just to get from A to B? It's not just young males that make up this insane, evil and potentially murderous bunch of lunatics . It's male, female, young AND old!

2005-04-06 10:01:00 | I'm interested in your *555 experience. I used it once 2 years ago when I also was passed on no-passing lines. Initially I shrugged figuring that we can all make misjudgements. But then he did it again with the next car and shot off at 140kph+. So I dobbed him - or tried to. The nice lady who answered, told me to find the nearest Police Station etc etc. This is in Central Otago about 7:00pm. I provided the vehicle details and ended the call. Three days later a local cop rang and told me it was a rental car and the driver flew out of Christchurch a day after my report. Damned frustrating. I know this particular road very well (lots of tourist buses) and I fully expected to see death. This was a frightening experience. Perhaps I'm naive but I'd have thought it would be a few seconds work for the police to trace that car and driver, long before he got to Christchurch. So I'm a bit disillusioned about *555.

2005-04-06 10:04:00 | Pull over, ****head, this is the cops Full tank, pockets lined with cash Full throttle, gonna rip some ass. Drive all day, and through the night, Romance the road, winding left and right. The stars above guide me, the moonlight is free. A feeling inside me, and the whole world to see. Driving fast makes me feel good, The speed of light trapped under my hood. Breaking laws, 'cause there's nothing to do. Driving the interstate, stopped for a 502 Hundreds of miles rolled off today. Signs lose their meaning, minutes tick away. Dirt roads to interstates, I must have drove them all. Cigarettes and burgers, caffeine and alcohol. Drive until daybreak, always on the go. Life on the freeway, night shift till dawn patrol. Driving fast makes me feel good, The speed of light trapped under my hood Breaking laws 'cause there's nothing to do. Driving the interstate, stopped for a 502. Stopped for a 502, next time it's gonna be you. Stars above guide me This feeling inside me. I drive until daybreak. Life on the freeway is Hell. I'm coming through.
