339454 2005-03-29 21:08:00 Several Linux versions are available for Mac, I know Ubuntu does.
As I'm very happy with OSX 3.8 Panther I haven't done much research.
Have fun with whatever you use.

339455 2005-03-29 21:26:00 As longs as your machine works for you, who cares what propaganda other people put up?

That's not always the point. The propganda is often aimed at naive people about to buy a computer for the first time or upgrade, by the Mac fanatics.

When I'm confronted by someone for a second opinion it's usually quite easy to talk them out of the mumbo-jumbo spun to them by a Mac fanatic.

339456 2005-03-29 21:29:00 I will seriously consider buying one purely based on the size of the hardware.
You haven't heard of Shuttle PC's and LCD screens?

339457 2005-03-29 22:05:00 Propaganda or not I prefer to use a computer that doesn't pick up all the crap written for Windows.

No Viruses for OSX, the old numbers game doesn't work either, 2,3 or 4% Macs should = 2,3 or 4% of the number of Windows viruses, there's still none after 4+ years.
I don't count the Word/Excel macro viruses that just affect Windows Office software on a Mac. They don't bother the OS.

Mac's are user friendly, secure by design, look good & work well.
Use Windows if you really prefer it but there are other, far safer options available.

Mac users generally use or have used Windows systems and are in a position to compare the two operating systems.
That is the big difference between a Windows user who has never used Mac OS X and then gives their opinion that it is all spin and not to be believed.
Many people on this forum run Windows as well as a Mac and their preferred choice is Mac OS X not because they are fanatics but because they have made an informed opinion from extensive user experience.

It is easy to stay in your own comfort zone and run down anything that threatens it but any comments or advice about something you are not familiar with can only be of doubtful quality.

All based on the same info, and come to the same conclusion, the only thing making Mac secure is its tiny 3% market share.

Edit, The 3rd link maybe more puff then substance,It apears someone has to install it on the machine.

Yeah, a shuttle is like 5 times the size of a Mac Mini.

*continues saving up for a mac mini, or a powerbook*

339462 2005-03-30 06:07:00 37 vulnerabilities over a year doesn't sound to bad, surely windows would have that in a month, although i have nothing to back that statement up with. plod (107)

Nothing new there Metla
The third link is old news and amounted to nothing as it required a manual install as administrator.

The other two are basically saying the same thing that there are no current problems that affect the Mac but not to get complacent.
"The OS is good at keeping out attacks, and Apple has a good patching system"
I don't believe it is just because windows is a bigger target.
There are millions of Mac users and if it was just as easy to infect a Mac I am sure it would have been done by now, if for no other reason than to fuel the ego of the virus writers.
Exploits in browsers is a problem for all operating systems but at least Apple and Mozilla are quick to update and fix any problems in Safari and Firefox.
