| 338244 | 2005-03-26 15:55:00 | George I'm surprised your not using a UPS with your servers. Me too. I'm going to get one soon, the money's not that easy to come by right now. By the responses it looks like most of the north island was affected. Wonder what it was that caused it. Both the servers running in the house handled it fine, but everything in my room lost its time / PC reset etc. My room's always more affected by these things, don't know why. Something to do with the wiring configuration I guess. My room used to be a shed, it's like 15 metres away from the actual house. And no I didn't wire the power myself - only phone & network... What does cause these types of few-second-brownouts? You usually think of something sudden like a transformer breaking or a power line falling down. But they would just break the supply of power totally. Perhaps some kind of short occurred, drawing immense current and lowering the countries voltage.... Oh well, I don't suppose it really MATTERS why it was - I'm just that type of person that I wanna know. |

| 338248 | 2005-03-27 01:56:00 | What sort of UPS you got murray? APC 500VA ES series with ADSL/LAN plugged in to it as well. It works out cheaper to get two at 500VA than one at 1000VA, with the added bonus of more outlets. |
