339147 2005-04-02 12:25:00 That wasn't personal

That was just an opinion

And yes I did see the fact you were conceived in the Naki.

Where I did go wrong in that post was to think you lived in Auckland at this current time.

339148 2005-04-02 12:26:00 Nagakawau should be damned,

I say this because having lived by it i know:

1. Its a dead river, the mines have killed it.

2. It has a continuous strong flow of water.

3. It is on the West Coast, and most dams are on the East, therefore it is less likely to be dry at the same time as the others.

4. It sits on a plateau before suddenly dropping about 300 metres to the rivermouth. It is perfect for a dam, lake, and deep drop with minamum piping, thus providing excellant power generation for the amount of water involved at minamal construction cost.

5. The SI has growing power needs too.

339149 2005-04-02 12:37:00 I agree that we shouldn't be divisive . But ask why this occurs? Are 2/3 of Kiwis jealous of Aucklanders? Envious?

Or is the division between AK and the rest a sign of a deeper unrest? I believe it is . Auckland receives political and economic favoritism . The petrol tax, taxpayer funding of Americas Cup challenge, $80 million for the local rail lines etc etc .

The Auckland region is represented in Parliament by about 50 MPs out of 120 . This is a result of list members combined with electorate members . We even have a Minister for Auckland .

Enough is enough .

339150 2005-04-02 12:41:00 Where I did go wrong in that post was to think you lived in Auckland at this current time. No, nothing against those who live there, including many old and dear friends of mine, but quite frankly i can't stand the place.

However there are over a million who seem to like it up there, for whatever reasons. Good wishes to them, may their lights stay on, and their music keep playing.

Hopefully the new extension cord(s) they need can be provided without too much fuss or harm to those in its path.

339151 2005-04-02 12:46:00 As usual you are so right 001.

Problem is,if one tries to do anything about it,one comes up against what is called the the head hitting wall syndrome.

Funny thing is, when I lived there I actually liked the place (in case you are keeping note, yes I have lived in a lot of places, parents used to shift a lot for a while, then settled in Southland).
A lot of the people up there were good sorts :) The only thing I didn't like was some of their attitudes (the 'NZ ends at the Bombays' attitude).

I took great pleasure in smashing it down at every opertunity during my stay there.
;)
Oddly i don't find that here in CHCH now, but that could be that my circles (musician types) tend to be those that get around too much to think the world ends in their own back yards.

339155 2005-04-03 22:19:00 The Chernobyl disaster was due to poor design/management. British reactors from the earliest, Magnox they were called from memory, have been safe. .....the big problem is what happens to the radioactive spent fuel. It is glassified and then stored for eternity, a problem for our descendents to have to cope with.

Since a good part of NZ includes fault lines, we may have trouble drilling a deep deep hole to deposit nuclear waste, should we ever go nuc-power. Other areas of the world have VERY stable geological areas that can store nuclear or any other waste for 'eons'; at 1 or 2 km depth, and no contact with ground water, the waste will not bother anyone, any time.

The problem is transporting it to the waste dump site. If this was not such a problem, maybe we could 'simply' give it to Nauru, which is hard up for ways to make money these days.
