646819 2008-03-06 01:40:00 Having problems with an optical mouse. The screen pointer is erratic and jumps all over the place for no apparent reason. Does anybody have a solution for this most annoying problem. I have run spyware over it a few times but to no avail.

Cheers

646820 2008-03-06 01:47:00 Does it jump all over the show only when you're moving it, or when you're not moving the mouse too?

And what surface are you using as a 'mouse pad'?

646821 2008-03-06 01:51:00 The pointer moves whenever you attempt to move the mouse.

It is being used on a standard anti static mousepad.

646822 2008-03-06 02:07:00 As a test try putting something non shiny on the Pad even a piece of standard A4 Paper , or a piece of paper on the desk and remove the mouse pad and see if it stops jumping, or turn the Pad over and as long as its not shiny try that.

Optical Mice will jump about like you describe if the laser lens cant read the surface correctly - or is getting false readings.

646823 2008-03-06 02:53:00 As Wainuitech says, if the laser gets 'confused' by graphics etc on your mouse's work surface, you'll get a lot of jumping.

I get this a lot at work, when people insist on using their desk planners (covered in logo's and advertising) as mouse pads. :)

646825 2008-03-06 03:03:00 Yeah, it is often the surface the mouse is running over. Change the surface and see how it goes. jberries (13063)
646826 2008-03-06 07:07:00 I've found those 3D mousepads (www.trademe.co.nz) will cause wild random pointer movement :p feersumendjinn (64)

The pointer is supposed to move when you move the mouse.

What do you mean by attempt to move the mouse?

646828 2008-03-07 02:16:00 I had this problem some time ago. Turned out to be a fault in the Ps2 connection to the motherboard. Plugged in a USB mouse and it was fine. mzee (3324)
