646648 2008-03-05 09:54:00 My DVD drive has stopped working. If I push the eject button the drawer opens about 2cm and stops. Then I can open it manually. And If I try close it then it only closes 2cm.

It has also stopped reading DVD's. If I manually close the dvd drawer it doesn't think theres a DVD in the drive.

I have just installed a new HDD today and formatted it and installed Vista. I had Vista before and it was fine.

The DVD drive is an ASUS DRW-1612BL and all the drivers are fine.

646650 2008-03-05 09:59:00 Reopen the case and make sure the Power Lead is fully seated - you may have slightly bumped something when installing the new drive.

Also go into the device manager and make sure the DVD drive is actually showing with no conflicts.

646651 2008-03-05 10:00:00 Unfortunately this the only drive I have.

It's showing with no conflicts in device manager and the power is the first thing I checked.

646652 2008-03-05 20:22:00 You didn't have a disc in there at the time you upgraded? If you did it could be stuck in the drive preventing the tray from opening. autechre (266)
646653 2008-03-06 03:47:00 Yea I did have a disk in the drive or how would I install windows.

But it is not stuck in the drive. As I said in the OP the drive opens about 2cm and then I can pull it open manually/close it manually.

Copy the CD to hard disk and run install from there, if you are game!
I keep all install cd's on hard disk as it saves time getting them out of storage when I need to use a new feature or fix something.
Thats what 500gig hard drives are for....

646655 2008-03-06 07:27:00 Havent had a cd/dvd shatter inside the drive, have you?
If you have, you may not have gotten all the pieces out, because it sounds like something is jamming the drawer and possibly misaligning the laser also; alternatively something may have fallen in/loose/out when you turned the case on its side when putting the HDD in. Take it apart and have a look (or buy a new one, they are fairly cheap (www.ferrit.co.nz) these days).
