| 339394 | 2005-03-29 09:54:00 | I have been doing Family Tree work on our families for some time now. The LDS site is by far the most useful. Unfortunately it tends to peter out after 1837 when civil registrations started. Most importantly it is FREE. There is a proliferation of "Pay" sites in the recent past, whereby an organisation can make some money. The 1881 census is freely available, the 1901 is partially free. All the rest for the UK are "Pay" or impossible to get into. FreeBMD is available & I have found it very good, but they don't, yet, come far forward enough towards the present. LDS have micro fiche of B M D s, so also do Geneo Societies. I need to do Internet research into BMDs after 1900+. Anybody got any ideas??? Thanks PJ |

You seem to be using the same sites as we do - mostly the free ones . I prefer to use my "pocket money" at this stage to purchase bmd certificates especially to find out the maiden names of ancestors . I have joined the NZSG and through them have purchased their CDs . I found version 3 very useful and am awaiting delivery of the latest version 4 . I guess you have been to their website which has members research interests apart from other sections . Have you joined any mailing lists in the areas of interest . There are lists for so many places and you can request help and list your surname interests on them . I have found them wonderful and its people helping people - just like this forum . These are all through www . rootsweb . com . Another wonderful site is www . genuki . org . uk and www . genforum . genealogy . com where you can list surname requests . I am sure there will be more knowledgeable people than I who can help but please email us if you think there is any way we can help further . (Stella) Smithie's other half |

| 339397 | 2005-03-30 02:10:00 | Hi Guys, Thanks for those words. I get our Certs thro Tony Fitzgerald in Rangiora, (not the Johnsonville one !!!!) Yes there are plenty of sites out there, but it seems that if you need 'recent' info it is neccessary to go where ever the micro fiche are. In the bigger centres they are closer to the present. LDS here in Wanganui is a smaller place. I Have not been there yet as their opening times are a bit haphazard. I think Wanganui Geneo Soc only have NZ BDM & not the UK. I need to get at Swansea & Neath, Wales, records. Nothing beats actually being there does it. Also need to see Cemetary records for Swansea 1980s for my Mother. The Old Sod himself is buried in Doncaster. Anyway will plod along Regards PJ |

We are on the Shropshire board for Maryann, also both on Genes reunited. As is usual with most of us pensioners, money for discretionary (waste of money to some people) spending is not easy to come by. Hence the need for FREE sites. PJ |
