There is yet another tenuous connection between the 1942 film 'Casablanca', and the threads on evolution of stars, and the universe.

The clues this time are 'Strasser'' and; "...lighthouse on the...."

A related clue is in the trailer to the film:

338080 2005-03-25 23:02:00 One clue was slightly wrong, they should be 'Strasser" and; "...Where the lighthouse..." Terry Porritt (14)
338081 2005-03-26 09:16:00 Just a stab in the dark Terry:

Col. Strasser was played by Conrad Veidt, who was the highest paid actor on Casablanca. Veidt had a major hit song in the German film F.P.1 (1933) "Where the Lighthouse Shines Across the Bay" in which is the line "Stands a fair-haired lassie at the door star gazing".

Any good? ;)

338082 2005-03-26 10:06:00 Gosh, that is more than a stab in the dark Winston, that is spot on!

That's right, Conrad Veidt played the part of the Nazi Major Heinrich Strasser who was shot by Rick, the clip of that incident is in the trailer.

In common with many other actors, writers and scientists including Einstein, Veidt, who had a Jewish wife, left Germany after Hitler came to power, and eventually went to America. He died of a heart attack in 1943.

The lyrics of the Lighthouse tune are:

Where the lighthouse shines across the bay,
There's a cottage kissed by fume and spray,
Cheerful logs to warm the winter day are blazing.
List'ning to the breakers on the shore,
From a tiny cottage thatched with straw,
Stands a fair-haired lassie at the door star gazing.
Watching the dark clouds, dreading the gale,
Counting the days since her lover set sail.
Where the lighthouse shines across the bay,
Seagulls on the shore have heard her say:
"Come home, my love, come home, dear love,
come home."

This song used to be played quite frequently on what used to be called Saturday Scrapbook on national radio, saturday nights, and also the Australian programme "Sentimental Journey" a 3 hour programme hosted by John West that ran for years on ABC radio.

He didn't actually sing the song, but spoke the words with a strong German accent, so that 'star gazing' comes out as 'stare gazing'

Here he is with the song, not a good recording, the needle has jumped a few times :)

338084 2005-03-26 10:33:00   I'm flattered and embarrased.

I can't take credit for knowledge of Casablanca. I confess that initially I had no idea of Terry's answers. Happily my friend Mr Google discovered all.

Why doesn't it work when I really need to know something?

And a link to the song Terry. Fantastic. Apparently it had a resurgence in the UK in 1980 when Terry Wogan played it on the radio. But very hard to find now.

Thanks for the fun.

338085 2005-03-26 21:29:00 A more mundane Quiz might ask . . .
Question 1:

If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis .
Would you recommend that she have an abortion?

Question 2:

It is time to elect a new world leader, and your vote counts . Here are the facts about the three leading candidates:

Candidate A:
Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologers .
He's had two mistresses . He also chain smokes and drinks 8-10 martinis a day .

Candidate B:
He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening .

Candidate C:
He's a decorated war hero . He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn't had any extramarital affairs .

Candidate A is Franklin D . Roosevelt

Candidate B is Winston Churchill

Candidate C is Adolph Hitler

And by the way:

Answer to the abortion question, if you said yes, you just killed Beethoven .

Pretty interesting isn't it? Makes a person think before judging someone .

Thanks Cicero.
