647632 2008-03-09 06:02:00 I have two problems here - not sure if they are connected.
1. I have difficulty getting onto IE6 - I have sfc /scannow, checked for viri and spyware. Nothing showing. I am learning to love Firefox!

2. I can't shut computer down. I get iexplore messages - which just go round and round. The only way I can shut the computer down is to kill the wall switch (only done that for the last two days).

I have the nasty feeling that I may have to reformat (have never done this by myself yet - have watched the big son do it, but he's not currently available.:( ).

647633 2008-03-09 06:05:00 I wouldnt switch it off, at the wall, while its going, all the time.

You could stuff it up or the hdd may get corrupted.

What if you dont use IE?? Then shut down?

Will it shut down?

If there's a reset button, on the case, use that.

Yes - I know those things... Haven't tried not using IE and seeing if it will shut down. Will give that a go. And yes - I've been using the reset button. You've given me a couple of things to try. Thanks.

647635 2008-03-09 06:22:00 To turn off as a last resort, hold the power up button on the computer in for 10 to 20 seconds and it will turn off

You could try repairing IE like this:

Click Start menu, select Search , select All Files and Folders .

Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.

Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.

In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf

In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.

Click the Search button.

In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.

Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.

Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

647636 2008-03-09 06:34:00 I've found out that if I don't use IE6 - no problems shutting down...

Onwards & upwards so to speak. I'll try your suggestions now Bevy. (although when I read that last statement, I think I've done that too!).

647637 2008-03-09 06:48:00 Right - when I go into ie.inf and try to reinstall I get the following message:

'The file 'iexplorer.exe on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.'

Type the file where the file is located, and then click OK.

In a box: Copy files from:
C:\Windows\inf\i386'

Now - I installed the beta Service Pack 3 a while ago. Should I uninstall this (and perhaps reinstall - or not...)?

647638 2008-03-09 06:56:00 Uninstall it, if youre planning on installing SP3 final.

I think you have to uninstall it anyway to install the final version of SP3.

Which maybe out in a few weeks

Altho RC2 (the full install), came out 3 days ago as well.

647639 2008-03-09 07:25:00 I have to ask why you don't just install IE7? apsattv (7406)
647640 2008-03-09 07:29:00 Bit of Info - I just slipstreamed SP3 RC2 into a XP SP2 CD and installed it earlier today, when doing a windows update I was expecting a few - but only one available was KB890830 - malicious Software Removal Tool.

When you right click on "My Computer"/Properties it says Service Pack3, V.3244

Now the Odd bit - when you try to put IE6 on the desktop Via Right click Desktop/properties/desktop/customize Desktop IE is not there.

Maybe SP3 is "Playing silly buggers" with IE6, expecting you to already have IE7 - This version of the service Pack doesn't automatically update IE6 to IE7, but IE6 Did open fine from start/all programs etc. Going to manually install IE7 Tomorow.
