647613 2008-03-09 04:48:00 Hi guys,

This one has got me absolutely stumped!!!

SPECS:

AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core CPU
Asus M3A mobo
2GB DDR2 - 800 RAM
320GB HDD
LiteOn DVD/RW drive SATAII interface
Asus nVidia 8500GT Silent 512MB Graphics card
Themaltake 430W PSU
Windows XP Pro

Problem 1 - Computer refuses to boot when restarted
Whenever I restart or have cold booted the unit it refuses to boot. I can tell when its going to fail because the front panel lights don't come on. The only way to get it to boot is to clear the BIOS - if I change anything in the BIOS and the machine reboots it errors again. I have tried every combination of RAM slot and chip that I can think of and nothing has worked.

I have read on the Asus site that other users have experience simialr problems but their experience is more with performance once Windows has loaded. I can't even get into Windows 90% of the time.... speaking of which

Problem 2 - Windows activiation occurs every time I boot into Windows

I activated Windows over the net and it said it was successful but then went back to the logon screen and asked me to activate Windows again. So I do this and it "fails"... I then activate Windows via phone... that works but it still tells me to activate Windows each time I login... when I login it tells me that Windows is already Activated!!!! and then proceeds to tell me I have to activate windows!!!! WTF is going on!!!! excuse my french but this is ridiculous.

I had to install all the device drivers in safe mode and have yet to install the nVidia drivers for the graphics board... which won't install in safe mode for some reason but I can't get into "normal" Windows either to do this.

I'm thinking maybe faulty RAM slots but once I clear the BIOS it will start up.

Anyone have any ideas??? I am most likely going to take the PC back to the retailer and try to get a replacement board... preferably a different model.

Comments and hints appreciated thanks.

647614 2008-03-09 05:03:00 I would check out The ASUS forum for this mobo (vip.asus.com)

You thought you had probs.

Looks like this mobo suffers from high temps, random reboots, network driver probs.

6 people from that forum are sending theirs back

This sound like what happens with the 1st prob ? (support.asus.com)

647616 2008-03-09 22:56:00 well I tinkered a bit more again last night... but met with no success. I am convinced now that the board itself is actually fault. It doesn't post at all unless I clear the BIOS for at least 10 minutes.

Any changes tot he BIOS results in the machine not posting at all.

As for the Windows activation problem well I don't know just yet. I suspect it may have something to do with the date settings in the BIOS...as I am unable to reset the time Windows setup may be spitting the dummy about things.

I'll be taking the whole machine back to the store I bought it from and see if I can get a replacement... hoefully one that will get into post without any hassles.

647618 2008-03-10 00:23:00 You updated the BIOS?

If so, then RMA it.

647619 2008-03-10 06:15:00 Well went back to the store of purchase and after some extensive testing the mobo was replaced. I'm installing XP Pro as we speak, change of the BIOS settings has not caused the system to error at all. I have disabled the LAN adapter just to be on the safe side.

They even replaced the Thermaltake PSU and gave me 2 new sticks of DDR2 RAM. So far I'm happy. The graphics card wasn't faulty as it was tested in another machine and worked fine.

All in all a good outcome so far... I will keep you all posted.

At this stage I'm not convinced that this mobo is as bad as people have made it out to be... this is apart from the LAN issue which Asus identified and provided a fix for.

647620 2008-03-10 08:50:00 ok new problem.... bloody loud CPU fan.

does anyone know how this AMD Cool 'n' Quiet rig-ma-roll works...

CPU temp is average 55 degrees or higher... the CPU fan is going at 4500rpm or higher and it doesn't seem to be helping the temps at all.

I installed a Zalman 8cm fan on the side panel but this doesn't seem to have done anything to help keep the temps down...

Any advice from AMD users???

Cheers,

647621 2008-03-10 08:58:00 Here's some info (www.amd.com)

Did you install the software for it?? Isnt it an option in the BIOS as well?

647622 2008-03-10 20:06:00 I'm not really sure how hot the Phenoms normally run, but have you tried cleaning and re-applying thermal paste to the CPU heatsink? wratterus (105)
