647484 2008-03-09 02:05:00 Hey there.
I want to upgrade my 40gb HDD in my old laptop to a bigger 120gb HDD, WITHOUT needing to reinstall windows and everything, is this possible?
I've got an external USB case for the laptop drives, and i also have norton ghost but i've never really used it for this sort of thing.
So is it possible to image everything onto the new 120gb hdd (running as an external) and then just swap the two drives over and it'll boot ok??

It may copy but may also crash after you use the 120 GB.

647487 2008-03-09 03:10:00 na i was just wondering if its possible to do tht - if copy everything from the (running) 40gb to the 120gb using Ghost, and then is it just a simple matter of swapping the drives and everything will continue to run as is? Fergie (6508)
647488 2008-03-09 03:35:00 This Will work, As i have done the exact thing you are asking before to customers Laptops. Only difference is I used the paid one, not the trial and already have the bootable CD.

Download Acronis true Image Trial (www.acronis.com) Load it on your Laptop, create a bootable CD from the Menu - attach the USB drive - boot from the CD - tell it to clone drive, Acronis will detect your 120Gb drive. Clone the whole drive to the 120 - when finished disassemble the 120 from the USB case - and install it in the laptop - boot and you will get a message saying " Found New Hardware" need to reboot etc - reboot and thats it away it will go.

647489 2008-03-09 06:28:00 not directly related to if the imaged disk will work...

but in most cases is it okay for the notebook?
I mean like the new hdd might use more power or runs hotter
how would those factors affect the upgrade?
or are they just not important...

647490 2008-03-09 06:37:00 Personally I have done the disk Upgrades to several Laptops, generally 40 or 80 Gb Hitachi Travelstar's to either 160 Hitachi Travelstar or 160 Seagates - never been a problem.

Drive is the same physical size so they fit straight in - never had any over heating problems as long a people follow normal procedures and dont put Laptops on soft surfaces like the bed and block the air intake vents - thta goes for any laptop, any drive..

647491 2008-03-09 20:16:00 I hope I’m not hijacking someone else’s thread but I have a similar dilemma .

I have a Compaq Presario 2500 Notebook with a 40gig HDD with 20 gig used .

Now I would like to back everything up too, but I’m faced with not having a Floppy Drive or a CD or DVD Writer . It has a CD Reader but not Writer .

I have an earlier version of GHOST but it needs a FDD and I Think it only does FAT32 file systems anyway???

So, what is the best way for me to guard against HDD failure, which, being a Laptop could happen at any time?

I’m quite happy to purchase another HDD if necessary, or, back up to my desktop if that is viable .

All suggestions appreciated . :thanks

647492 2008-03-09 20:42:00 HDD manufacturers provide a cloning program that you could use. Doesn't require a CD Writer or FDD.

If its a Seagate Drive you could use DiscWizard, if its a Western Digital Drive use data lifeguard tools.

That’s helpful .

Now, do both the Existing and Target drives have to be by the same manufacturer?

If not, does the programme used apply to the Existing or the Target Drive?

I think I can see how this would work on a Desktop but Slaving up another HDD to a Laptop got me, for the moment anyway .
