340031 2005-03-31 22:53:00 It is traditional to post the full links here, Jack, not just the file names. :rolleyes:

340033 2005-04-01 06:10:00 Try setting the mip maping quality setting to 4. To do that go to Options menu/settings/display/hardware.

340034 2005-04-01 09:50:00 Thanks Trev, I've changed it. Will give it a run tomorrow and see if it's made any difference.

Now I have another problem. This is probably caused by putting scenery and textures in the wrong place. I can't work out this addon scenery and texture.
No matter what NZ airfield I choose the program changes the airport name to a lat ang long settinng. These settings are not on an aerodrome. Some are even over the sea.
Where should I put NZ airports and scenery. In the addons folder, or in the Oceania one , or do I create a NZ folder in the scenery folder??????

340035 2005-04-01 13:45:00 Jack, as mentioned before, try adjusting different settings and see what happens, you can do this whilst flying, just pause the sim (press P) and then press alt to bring up the toolbar.

Under Settings, Display, try Terrain mesh complexity 100%, Terrain Texture Size High, Terrain Detail - Land Only, Water Effects - High, Scenery Complexity - Normal, Autogen density - Dense Dynamic Scenery - Normal. Check the Dawn/Dusk texture blending, Extended Terrain Textures, Add on Dynamic Scenery and Ground scenery cast shadows boxes are ticked.

Go to the Weather tab. For now, set this as Sight Distance 110miles, Cloud Draw 40miles, 3-d cloud 30%. Click detailed clouds but set the slider low.

On the Hardware tab click render to texture, transform and lighting. Leave Anti-Aliasing off but select Bi Linear in the filtering. Have your vid card handle the AA. Mip mapping set to 4 and Hardware rendered lights to 5.

The fs config file is in a hidden folder here:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9

If you want, set explorer to show hidden files and open this in Notepad. Change the following settings. Copy the original cfg first and rename it fs9.cfg.original or similar so you have a back-up if you mess up.

Under TERRAIN

TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.500000
TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=4

This may help sharpen the textures.

I am not sure what's up with you not being able to select an airport to start at. On the Create a Flight screen you should just type in the airport code NZRO, NZAA etc or the airport name, and select the gate to start at. Weird.

The sceneries should have their own scenery and textures folders in them. Like this

Auckland -
- Scenery
- Texture

You can just place the main Auckland folder in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9 directory. Then go to the Scenery Button when you start FS, select Add Scenery, browse to the folder you want to add, select it (ie click it once, not 'open' it). Move it down a few notches, that is, have your terrain mesh scenery at top, and the add-ons after this. You then have to close out of FS and restart to have the scenery 'locked-in'.

With all sceneries you will find a read me file that should tell you exactly what to do.

Finally, I have some more pics if you want to take a look at the effects I am getting:

Flight from Mt Cook to Milford (photobucket.com) < - Flown today. hosted on Photobucket

Few other screenshot albums (www.nz033.orcon.net.nz) <- may load a bit slow, Orcon hosted

It's a fairly addictive hobby. I have been flying on Vatsim as of late, and flew to Tel Aviv the other night with real time ATC. Awesome chatting to others around the world on voice.

340037 2005-04-01 19:59:00 Thank you Jester.
It loks like I have got my files in a bit of a mess. For a start I do not have a fs9config file on my computer. Definately not under Application data. and a full search has failed to find it.
I may have deleted it. Don't know why.
No matter what NZ airfield I select, even if I type it in, as soon as I hit "fly now" it changes to a lat/long setting. I have not been able to find my position. I am out of range of any NZ beacon.

So I have decided to uninstall MS Flight 9 . Do a good clean up and then re-install it again. This time I will be a bit more careful.
Thank you,
Jack
