341570 2005-04-06 08:46:00 The Sony drive is a DVD-ROM (read only, not writer), while the dual layer Global drive would be a DVD-RW (writer). This accounts for the price difference.

341571 2005-04-06 08:52:00 What do you mean by top end jobbie? A dual layer, that takes a wide range of media types? I have a NEC ND-3500a combo drive (CD-RW/DVD-RW) which is dual layer. Got great reviews and is nice and quiet to use. My one came with various Nero OEM packages.

Others will have recommendations for DVD-RW dual layer as well undoubtly. The Pioneers are also good (108/109? series)
