341517 2005-04-06 11:10:00 I live in a hill suburb of Christchurch relatively near rural areas. when we moved here we had regular visits by 6-8 Bellbirds. Some people moved into an adjacent flat with their 2 cats both of which had collars with bells attached.
Within 2 months all the Bellbirds were reduced to little bunches of green feathers deposited in our garage.
No more sweet sounds of the NZ Bush.
I like cats but they cannot be allowed to predate on our native species. Pet cats should be confined to their owners dwellings as they are in some parts of Canada. All cats should be registered and if caught roaming free should be considered predaters and impounded or destroyed if they cannot be caught. Disagree if you feel you can, but you won't convince me that cats are not a major problem.

341518 2005-04-06 11:18:00 Cats & dogs should be contained. ie fenced in. If a cat comes into my garden I should be allowed to terminate it. Possum traps look like a good solution. If my dog wanders onto other peoples property, I get into trouble. The dog's not much bigger than a rat, so hardly threatening. Cats freely wander, dig up & poo anywhere other than their own home. Dogs that bark should be silenced (debarked) at the owners expense. Cats are a real pain in suburban areas. I hear in Melbourne cats are not allowed out at night, don't know if it's true though. I know of someone who spent an arm & a leg on a red nosed pit bull about 6 weeks ago. I got some good news yesterday, it got run over last week, that's 1 less. You could go on about animals in suburbia forever & ever & ever....................

Any un-invited cat or dog that wanders onto farm land deserves a bullet.

Hmmm, since cats and dogs are such a hassle, it is best to have kids... Cheers :)

I do find that really strange indeed .
Bellbirds are not ground feeding birds, they go for nectar and fruits . I have never ever seen a Bellbird on the ground .

Cats usually catch ground feeding birds like blackbirds, sparrows, and some of the finches that eat seeds from low growing plants lie Cosmos .

341522 2005-04-06 21:02:00 One bloke not fond of cats gives his thoughts: www.mykp.co.uk

The above bloke's forum: www.mykp.co.uk

And it's not me, by the way! :)

Poor guy - he has a severe allergy to cats. There is a company in the USA (where else?!) that already has heaps of orders for genetically modified cats that do not cause allergies. Anyway, the guy's website is interesting to read, funny but truthful, e.g....

I’ve taken to some drastic measure to stop the b****** s****** in my garden, I’ve bought car scarers, they work to a fashion but I’d need loads to cover all of the garden and there £35 each!. I’ve tried putting scent down in the garden which is supposed to scare cats away, but when it rains it washes this away. I’ve even put little pointy sticks in the garden to discourage them from squatting down but they just **** elsewhere. The most effective method I have found is water. A good soaking with the hose pipe usually stops a cat in its tracks but this involves sitting watching the garden all day!

341523 2005-04-06 21:05:00 Dogs will go through a large area of bush in a relatively short period of time, killing every Kiwi they can find and leaving the carcasses as a graphic indicator of their passage. My analogy to dogs mauling sheep is fairly accurate, they get as many as possible in as short a time period as they can. Apparently park staff have found evidence of two, three or more dogs acting together (as they do) with devastating results like the total destruction of the adult Kiwi population over several hectacres in a single session. Again, much like the poor old farmer who discovers a paddock or two of umpteen dead, dying or injured sheep, it happens quckly, the dogs aren't hungry so don't stop to eat once a kill is made.

In either case the dogs should be (will be) shot and the owners, if they can be found, made to clean up the mess.

Thanks Murray - I did not realise how bad dogs were to Kiwis. Although I am a dog lover (and like cats also), I would not hesitate to shoot them if I was a farmer or Kiwi conservationist.

I guess these cats didn't know that and so it didn't stop them.
