339822 2005-03-31 18:45:00 I don't realy care what they do to petrol prices. These days a tank of petrol lasts me about six weeks.

But what keeps me fumeing is the progressive tax they have put on cigarettes. Do you non-smokers realise that the tax on cigs. is increased every year. A packet now costs over $11.
That's about $20 a day I have to pay for one of the last pleasures in my life.
Another couple of years and I won't be able to afford food.

And one of those responsible for this tax is our FEMALE mp. The same one who can't (won't) get a bill through the mad-house to allow our shops to open at Easter or Xmas.

Ohh, so you also one of the dangerous people who "drink and smoke", go home after a smoking session and beat the wife and kids up while intoxicated by nicotine overindulgence? Your few milligrams of secondhand smoke is the number one cause of cancer in people, it just cannot be caused by the tons of carcinogenic gases emitted by cars, trucks and industry on a daily basis.

For your sins you will be punished in the pocket mate, you should switch to the much more social acceptable habits of overindulging in booze and drugs, at least the prices stay stable. For your $20 you could pack away anything up to 20 cans of beer a day, and your MP will be a happy mommy.

Anyway, statistics show that 25% of accidents are caused by drunk drivers, so that means 75% are caused by sober drivers. So keep the darn sober drivers off the road so that the drunks can drive safely!!

339824 2005-03-31 21:25:00 Bobo you realy are a clown.
Just as a point of interest I have been smoking for 65 years and have never had any form of illness that can be attributed to smoking. And I am certainly not going to stop now.
I hardly ever drink and I have NEVER beaten up my wife. (Though I have felt like it at times) :o
A point that amuses me is, people have been smoking for over 500 years. Why has it suddenly become bad for your health?
Motorists kill more people than cigarettes. I say ban motorists.

339825 2005-03-31 21:59:00 Ditto, been smoking for 28 years, no problems. My dad smoked and lived to 80, died of causes unrelated to smoking. So did his brothers, most of them reaching over 85. I would say that if you are going to get cancer it would have happened anyway, smoking or not, it's in the genes. It may just help it on a bit.

The problem is that drinking is much more of an evil to society and health, but it seems to be socially accepted that the unsocial behaviour going with it is OK. And let's not talk about the damage done related to booze, i.e. liver failure, injuries due to intoxication, broken homes, drunk driver accidents, etc. Now doesn't that cost the taxman much more than the smokers?

I have no problem with paying taxes on booze and ciggies, it is a luxury. But to make one the scapegoat for sicknesses in non-smokers and load it to the hilt while the greater of the evil (booze & drugs) gets way with murder (literally) daily goes beyond me.

One consolation, at least they didn't blame the people in New Plymouth being sick due to all living next to heavy smokers, it was proved that the chemical factory emissions was the cause.

339826 2005-04-01 03:12:00 The argument about the relative "merits" of booze and tobacco will go on forever. But please remember that one glass of beer will not do you any harm whereas one cigar/ette harms you in the short and long term. Read about the contents of cigarette smoke, you will be surprised. Of course, overindulgence in alcohol in any form has serious downsides, but you don't have to overindulge in tobacco to reap its rewards.

Now, where did I put my fags?

339828 2005-04-01 04:23:00 You should all be greatful for the increases imposed ..... you have all obviously wanted the increase and are willing to accept it. The polls dont lie ..... Labour's popularity is still increasing as they stretch their poll lead.

Who put these wallies in government in the first place? I am pleased to say it wasnt me!

339829 2005-04-01 04:36:00 According to Bob Field, Head of Toyota NZ,(and Helen Clark agrees) we should all be paying an 80c Carbon Tax. KiwiTT_NZ (233)
339830 2005-04-01 05:48:00 I was bictching to someone about the price increase today. Their reply was, how much is petrol a litre - $1.29 and how much do you spend on a litre of beer ~$5 from the student bar. Putting it proportion, petrol is quite cheap compared to beer and I spend a lot more money on beer so i can't complain too much

339831 2005-04-01 05:58:00 So now petrol is marginally more expensive than tap water. ;) A service statrion near home was selling water at $5 for a 4 litre bottle. I've got a tap at home, and I know the water is the same. Graham L (2)
