340406 2005-04-01 18:34:00 For a number of reasons we are leaving sunny Florida to spend 5-6 months in NZ for the NZ summer.
here in the US I have found several sources for multi voltage and PAL\NTSC plasma TVs. the prices are advantageous even allowing for GST.
my questions
1. if I subscribe to Sky will there be any HD transmissions
2. is it correct that the system in NZ is PAL B?
3. I am buying a house in Havelock north and have heard that ther is only cable in Aukland. Are there any plans for further cabling?
4. is telephone DSL the only option for high speed internet access?
5. anything else I should consider

cant wait to spend more time in NZ

In answer to your questions:

1) No.

2) Yes, we use B on VHF and G on UHF, B & G are mutually compatible. See Here (www.seamation.co.nz) for details, check carefully that the TV complies with vision and sound requirements.

3) There is no cable in Auckland, only in Wellington. No plans for expansion at present.

4) No, but cable is limited as above, and wireless coverage is also limited. DSL availability depends on distance from nearest exchange.

5) No need for hurricane shutters, alligator traps or snake anti-venom.

Cheers

..............And CHCH.

...................unless my cable modem is actually hollow polystyrene, (as its weight suggests), and my dear wee flaptop connects to the world by magic!

340410 2005-04-02 00:28:00 most but not all tv's these days are multi national. also check what frenquency range it can receive. some tv's come out with UHF only (mostly from the UK tho).

also one thing to consider is if it needs repairing odds are the parts will not be advailable here.

340412 2005-10-14 10:17:00 I'm curious. We all enjoy TV but I know a few people who still use a 14inch only.

I'm just wondering how important television is to your living in NZ? There are relatively cheap 29inch sets and secondhand TVs are worth very little. Its a lot of heavy fragile technology to bring a long way.

But I'm not criticising your enquiry, merely musing. :D

340413 2005-10-14 10:26:00 TV.... hmm...

Both my flatmate and my son have a facination with strange computer monitor like devices that can only monitor external networks! Are these what you mean?

Can't see the point myself!

4. is telephone DSL the only option for high speed internet access?

as Billy T said Auckland only has ADSL & wireless internet as well but the coverage for ADSL & wireless internet limited & Don’t expect any thing like what you are use to over there if you get ADSL the Max you will get is 2Mbps down / 128Kbps up & We have Bandwidth caps, but that depends on the ISP, the biggest cap you can get with most ISPs is 10 GB per month, but some isps offer more then that like 12 – 15 GB caps or daily caps or like orcon (www.orcon.net.nz) you can get 1 GB free then after you use that you pay I think $10 for every 10 GB after that or something like that…

I Hope you have a nice time here & I Hope our summer will be good for you as well. :)

340415 2005-10-14 18:38:00 There is a firm in Hawkes Bay which offers high-speed internet - Airnet - via a special wireless system. They can reach almost all of Hawkes Bay, and their costs aren't too bad - though still dearer than ADSL. somebody (208)
