647723 2008-03-09 19:45:00 When I set up my hard drive I was silly enough to only allocate 5 gigs to the partition for the opsys (XP Pro). It was fine for a year using only 2.5 gigs. But over the last couple of days I get warned that I'm running out of space, and I see it's only got around 200 megs free.

What could cause this? I never install anything on that partition and My Docs is located elsewhere.

Any suggestions on how to remedy this? Obviously I can reformat, but can't be bothered right now.

Thanks.

647724 2008-03-09 19:58:00 How much free or unused space on the drive? You can change partition sizes gparted.sourceforge.net but if you're short of space elsewhere it's just putting off the inevitable. PaulD (232)
647725 2008-03-09 20:05:00 Windows XP should allow you to change the size of your partitions I think. Have a look in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management.

Otherwise, Partition Magic or Acronis Disk Director should do the job.

Windows XP should allow you to change the size of your partitions I think. Have a look in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management. Not from within Windows - Windows can't resize its own system partition while it is running. Use gparted on a livecd for this.

647727 2008-03-09 20:29:00 as mentioned before

pagefile, hyberfile.sys, system restore?
have you run one of the drivespace thingies that show you the drive as a pie and which directories are using the most space (sorry i forget the name something like diskpie) also the one that show you space used by filetype (suprisingly handy, i found 3 linux iso files that were using 5 gb on my c:\)

647728 2008-03-09 20:32:00 Hello,

why are you going to resize the partition? May be the problem causes by allocating temporary files or as Bletch said. Find out first what the space amount.

btw. I' m using 2.5 gig over 4 or 5 years without any trouble.

647729 2008-03-10 06:12:00 Get the Scanner from this page:

www.steffengerlach.de

It will tell you exactly what files are taking up all the space.

647730 2008-03-10 09:22:00 I use a very useful utility for graphically displaying disk usage called "WinDirStat". Download from here: http://windirstat.info/ Rod J (451)

Bloat.

System Restore.

Turn that off for starters.

This is why I have an image of c:, take a look at the size of the Windows folder now, bet its increased.

Mine here at present is 1.39GB.
Total C: 3.9GB.
