344123 2005-04-12 09:50:00 I'm sorry. When was apartheid officially adopted in this country? I must have missed that.

What am I going on about?
In the middle of this Tamahere saga was this little gem, tacked onto the end of a One News story: Tamihere & Parekura Horomia were unavailable for comment because they were "only talking to Maori media".

Excuse me? Can we say "I'm sorry. I'm only talking to white reporters today."
How the hell can they get away with that?

(Guess I'm banned now, huh?)

344124 2005-04-12 09:53:00 My posts can only be read by rich, attractive young ladies who want to move to Wanganui and share wife duties with Mrs Metla.

First job of the new recuit will be to convince Mrs metla its a good idea.

344125 2005-04-12 09:55:00 No, I don't see why you would be...

I don't really think it's that bad in this case (the actual thing, not your post).

344126 2005-04-12 10:08:00  :horrified Ooooooooo Metla, lad....

Do you remember the famous words from Tale of Two Cities "It is a far,far better thing I do..."? I feel it is my duty to do this "better thing" and WARN you, just from a FEMALE point of view....ya ain't got no show o' havin' yo own way, boy!!

I seem to remember that the brave man who said the quoted words was about to have his HEAD chopped off. We NEED you, Metty boy...We can forgive the fluffy pink slippers that you wear in the shop....we NEED you. :help:

Hey, but it's been really REEALLY great knowing you, pal. M A and P J

Get over it

Considering some of the indignations US european have put Maori through in the past... that comment is tame

344128 2005-04-12 10:21:00 A perfectly reasonable question Peter .

One answer is that Maori are regarded as a disadvantaged minority native people . Anti-discrimination laws and beliefs are rooted in the premise that the dominant group in any society will repress the minority unless they are restrained . And it is fair to say this happens .

So what harm is done if a member of a minority group openly prefers his own group? The dominant society is not harmed or threatened .

Let me add that this is not nescessarily my personal view .

344129 2005-04-12 10:22:00 I predict that an argument will form in this thread, I could add to it but I will choose not to. So I wonder how long before this thread gets locked.

344130 2005-04-12 10:49:00 I'm a pom, by the way . And I don't object to being called a pom . Even the lads in my cricket team call me "Pom" (original, huh?!) .

So why is it people of Pakistani origin kick up a fuss about being called "Pakki" . I don't understand why that word, which is basically an abbreviation of 'Pakistani', is so offensive and not-very-politically-correct .

This may be just one example, but one could argue that certain minority groups have a knack of repressing the dominant groups and getting their own way .

344131 2005-04-12 11:20:00 It would have been a 'far better thing we did' if they had talked to no-one... or everyone. Only talking to people with a certain colour skin smacks of racism, especially if it is perpetrated by someone of a so called 'disadvantaged minority'. (We can assume that they should know better?)

Racism is racism, there are no mitigating circumstances... but then again I really don't like blond people from Remmers driving expensive four wheel drives. Does that count?

I only talk to people I want to talk to. I'm sure you're just the same. Why isn't John allowed to only talk to people he wants to?
