344021 2005-04-12 07:56:00 Pyramid schemes - we've probably all come across them from time to time .
They're designed to mislead people into believing they can receive significant amounts of money with a small outlay . :badpc:

I hate the things . Along with the classic Nigerian Scams, they are evil, greed-driven and can cause inconvenience and misery to alot of people (mainly those either stupid enough or desperate enough to take part in them) . :groan:

Of course, anyone trying to suck you into a pyramid scheme (such as this ( . comcom . govt . nz/MediaCentre/MediaReleases/2004/rubbishbinrecommendedforchainlette . aspx" target="_blank">www . comcom . govt . nz) one, which I received in the post today, by the way) will disagree with the above (if they do know the truth then they are trying to scam you, if they don't know the truth then have already been sucked in) . :annoyed:

My poll (anonymous) is - have you ever participated in a pyramid scheme?

If the answer is yes, and you don't mind revealing your identity, tell us about your experience . :help:

344022 2005-04-12 08:37:00 I was once invited to a "meeting" by an ex-friend . She said she met these wonderful people who changed her life . I should have said "no" right there, but she was beautiful, charming and a little urgent . So I went along reluctantly .

I wasted a whole evening listening to a bunch of ars****** telling everyone how this thing made them better communicators, and improved their relationships with their parents/partners/childen/pets/complete strangers . All with the help of this course (lots of buzzwords, TLAs, pseudo-technical terms, smiling-bubbly-happy people) .

Then they wanted me to sign up for a weekend course . I asked where the toilet was and climbed out the window and went to the pub .

Moral of the story: Never go to a "meeting", "lecture", "barbecue", "ragey party" where the invitor is a bit shifty and evasive on the exact details . Especially when it is "life-changing" .

344023 2005-04-12 15:27:00 My friend of mine asked me to join a pyramid scheme . I said no because I remember that at polytech pyramid scheme is a scan . I heard its illegal under the fair trading act and also you won't earn money .

Anyway . My friend said to me she has just joined and that her friend earned thousands of dollars and has now retired . My friend knows a guy who would be willing to fly down from auckland to palmerston to talk to me since I am unusure . I said I'll wait a while and see what happens to you first .

She says that the company she is in sells all sorts of products like body notion, toilet paper just anything I think .

She earns them by adding profit on top of the products she gets from the company . Kinda like what she sells she gives 30% commission to herself and the rest goes back to the company .

She says i know its not easy to earn like this . What I heard was you simply go to your friends and advertise the product . If they like it they will buy it and their friend will tell their friend or family etc and gradually you built up a lwhole list of customers .

I still said I don't want to join . . .

But I was wondering . Can you earn much money this way?

I rather stick to my current business . Selling Mobile, accessories and electronics online at trademe

Hmm . . Is it safe or is it not?Ist my friend being tricked?

Yes you can make money this way and it is the way that products like Amway sell their wares. The only way to make lots of money is to encourage lots of people to sell as well, then you get a commission from any sales they make. In this sense, it is a pyramid type of arrangement but only the few at the top make lots of money, the rest make a little pocket money only. Thus, the reps are always trying to encourage you to sell the product as well with their 'life changing' arguments.

344027 2005-04-13 11:17:00 I've warned her and the company she works for is amway . www.a2k.co.nz

My father says that amway isn't very reliable sometimes they sell fake stuff.

Anyway. She says that she hasn't sold anything yet.She will like promote it by asking friends to buy these products.Something wholesale price.

My father says.If your down the bottum in the pyramid its not just gonna be a waste of time your just waiting yourself to get caught .

Unless your at the top of the pyramid then your not gonna earn much!!!

344029 2005-04-14 07:28:00 there are heaps of networking based selling schemes (which are legit) such as amway. you can earn decent money doing it but you need to be the right sort of person to sell door to door etc. those higher up may make more money but they also need to keep those under them running. some people earn hundreds of thousands of dollars but they usually have done it for a long time and manage a huge amount of sales people.
these schemes are not to be confused with Pyramid schemes. amway style schemes make money selling products, Pyramid schemes make money by adding people to it ie they don't sell a product.

i've known a few people who get right into pyramid schemes but they never make anything out of it and often get abused by people they have asked to join.

Yes indeed.

My sister-in-law came over three years ago with one of the higher-ups in the (legal) pyramid-style business. The presentation was very clever and while I felt like joining, my head told me otherwise. After all, trying to push my friends into the scheme :yuck: would not be nice. My sis in law does have the right personality, with many contacts, and I was sure that she would succeed, and retire early. Nope. She has given up. The only way to make money in these things is to be first off the blocks when the company sets up in NZ or in your region (a large population!). That is why the promoters are so happy and stimulating: they are the ones who make money and will make even more money if you get sucked in. BTW, my sis-in-law went on numerous conferences around NZ and even Oz, paying her own way. It was her husband that spilled the beans to me one day saying that for all the fuss and effort she still was not making a profit.

Amway... a friend of mine in Rotorua gave up his professional job when he got sucked into Amway. Now he is ANTI Amway: hates it! But from what I know, it is in fact a legit company and for some (house wives, usually) it can give them weekly pocket money.
