343426 2005-04-11 07:24:00 Try www.xbox-scene.com or xbox-hq.com

I have heard of someone doing that here in Christchurch.

343427 2005-04-11 07:59:00 I can recommend xmods.co.nz, and also modz.co.nz (dantok) as good modders. Have been 100% happy with both of them.

Basically:
Mod it - Its easiest. You can install linux without modding it but I dunno about XBMC.
You dont _need_ a bigger HDD, only if you want to store the media locally.
Goto ThePirateBay and grab the torrent for the latest XBMC - They post binaries every week or so.

Ive played with many dash's, and XBMC is great, so is SlaYerS EvoX Auto-Installer. Linux is great if you want to do more with your xbox, but not for everybody.....

Cheers

343429 2005-04-11 10:20:00 I use my Xbox as a media centre all the time, in fact I don't really use it to play games. I soft modded it and installed XBMC on it, along with a web browser, Internet TV streamer and some other programs. It is hooked up to my wireless network and happily streams music and video from my main pc.

A soft mod is relatively easy to do and is completely reversible. You only need a copy of Splinter Cell, MechAssult or 007 and a memory card with the right hack on it. If you can borrow the game and card from a friend, it is free. There are plenty of tutorials about. One thing to note is that there are different ways of softmodding, depending on your Xbox version. A softmod lets you ftp to your Xbox, install new dashboards and programs, as well as playing backed up games.

As far as a replacement dashboard, I use UnleashX. It is neater than EvoX and has more features. I wouldn't worry about upgrading the hard drive. If you have 802.11g it will stream without stuttering. Besides 8gig holds a lot of movies and audio. The 1.6 versions actually have 10gig. Once you have watched the movies, just delete them.

Installing Linux is cool, but a bit pointless. I had it going for a couple of days, but it was only a geek thing. If you really want to have word programs, etc Windows CE will run on Xboxes up to 1.6. It is a problem getting it to work on 1.6 boxes.

So, it is perfectly feasible to use an XBox as a media centre. It helps if you have broadband though. There are a lot of cool things that it can do, like Internet TV, but it needs a fast connection. I often watch things like Canadian news on mine, or stream down movie trailers.

One good place to start is XBMC magazine. Have fun. If you are in Wellington, get in touch if you need help.

343430 2005-04-11 11:10:00 Actually, its not just 1.6 versions that have 10gb HDD's. I have a 1.3 revision box and it came with 10gb.

Even 802.11b will stream movies fine.... Streaming DVD's probably using VideoLAN Client if you wanted :D

This may be of use:
thepiratebay.org

I quite liked running Linux on my Xbox. Meant I could use aMsn.... A mouse/keyboard are a great addition, and you can then play some basic windows games also :)

It also meant I could plug in my external HDD/DVDRW and use that :D

If you want it just for a Media Center, then just XBMC would suffice quite nicely :)
