343219 2005-04-09 11:03:00 Did anyone else wonder about those huuuuuge video screens in Rome, for the pope's funeral? They produced bright clear pictures, in daylight, and appeared much larger than normal sized billboards. How did they do it? Daylight viewing seems to rule out projection, and LEDs would be too expensive for mobile screens. Any ideas? Strommer (42)
343220 2005-04-10 02:13:00 I would go with projection - I saw a news clip earlier in the week (perhaps Thursday night?) of a crew setting up a huge (canvas looking) screen on scaffolding which made me think then that they must have a huge projector for the size of the screen :)

343221 2005-04-10 03:57:00 Thanks Midavalo. They must be projection, but the lamps must be super bright for daylight viewing! Rock concerts must have this type as well. Strommer (42)
343222 2005-04-10 04:33:00 I doubt if they were projection screen. Unless they managed to put a blackout curtain over the sun. ;)

I saw pictures of the back of the NY Times display panel when it was converted to use (I think) high intensity LEDs. (It used to use incandescent lamps). There were a lot of cables feeding tens of thousands of LEDs. Technology advances ... 1W, 3W, 5W LEDs are available now, and probably cheap if you buy enough. To get television resolution wouldn't need excessive numbers.

P.S. I wuz right, ;) so have a look at How Stuff Works (electronics.howstuffworks.com)
