342892 2005-04-19 23:31:00 Worked fine at the 3 woosh showrooms I visited. Merivale is well out of range so I'm not surprised that it didn't work Edward (31)
342893 2005-04-20 04:37:00 I think the light is beginning to dawn for you .

i . e . Three sites (a hundred grand each? more?) and two users on the system . Wow .

Even then, I'm betting the service is pretty average compared to sitting outside a Starbucks and using WiFi connected to a Telecom DSL line . With that, and two coffee-swigging customers using WiFi, I'd expect at least 1Mbps each to the AP, probably much more . And that's gotta cost less to build and run than Woosh .

So I can't see the Woosh system being even marginally viable, so it's hardly a deal to warm any investor's heart . Their balance sheet must be spewing red ink everywhere . And if that's not working out, there's not likely to be a long term future for those two users . Or for the network .

If Flush Splash and Gurgle (sorry, Woosh) ever gets serious about selling in places like Christchurch (maybe by installing another 50 sites from their latest order of 180, the service might just maybe perhaps be good enough to sell to someone) they may be able to add some more users, but then the results are still going to end up garbage because the system is so fundamentally limited capacity and range wise . Have we talked about interference problems in Woosh yet?

Heck, Merevale was not far from the nearest site . That was my point . If it was an unwired or iburst system, I would have got 500kbps DL easy, and maybe much more .

Sorry . That Woosh system is just crud even when compared to dialup . And I don't have to pay $200 for a dialup modem, do I?

Heck, I reckoned I could have picked up a stone and hit the site from where I was. I guess if the showroom is on the same roof as the site it'll work great.

And by "work", I guess you mean "Gosh, I can ssslllloooowwwlllyyyy see a web page coming....wait....wait...it's almost here....zzzzzz"

You guys are hilarious. Uh, these days, most users need more than 3 to 5 kbps. Maybe you work/sell for Woosh, Eddie?

As much as you work for an iBurst ISP allie.

Let me show you a map of christchurch. www.metroinfo.org.nz

If woosh is CBD only (IE Limited central city area), how can you expect woosh to get a deacent signal from that far away?

Good map! Shows the point exactly. My motel was about about halfway between the word merivale and the inner city. Christchurch is not big. Nor is the inner city that built up. Few high buildings. lots of gaps.

Now, I would have expected that with three (count 'em....three!) sites, you'd expect that outdoor coverage (line of sight between site and motel window, facing that way) would be enough to get some sort of signal. Heck, any sort of signal.

Well, there was something. But, for all I know, given the strength, it could have been from any of the sites. Not enough to work with however.

The distance on your map works out to be, ah....wait...(get's out ruler, measures scale on my Hertz rent a dent map...) about 1 km.

Wouldn't you reckon you'd get coverage that far? Cheap WiFi systems sold by Dick Smith can go that far. When Bell South launched cellular in the same city, they had one site in the city that covered more than those three Flush sites.

Not very good, is it....

342900 2005-04-20 07:38:00 Just to jerk it slightly back on topic . davidakl, I suspect your Woosh limit is set below what your theoretical dialup speed could be, but 32kbs isn't the end of the world for the dialup speed you bought into when you signed the contract . Maybe not entirely fair but not much you can do at this point in time that will not cost you .

It makes me wonder why you went to Woosh in the first place when you had such a good connection via copper, or is ADSL not implemented at your local exchange?

Those that are reporting 56, 64, 115kb/sec et al, are getting their info from Windows' communication with the modem software not your actual data throughput, as Goddie pointed out . If, for aguements sake, you connected to a LAN before the dialup modem, Windows would report 10 or 100MB/sec as your connection speed . You can change Windows setting to reflect the true speed but I can't remember what exactly and can't be bothered digging .

Not very good, is it . . . . Dude . . . you got a weak signal because you were out of the zone and it didn't work . . . . .

Ah yeah . . . not very good . . . no . :illogical

Probably doesnt work in Arthurs pass either . Crap service there to i'd imagine . Seeing it doesn't work outside of the zone it claims to work in, we'll just try, fail, and dis the service for not meeting your expectations . If you had used a dish you could have got it to work, but seeing you didn't , it didn't work .

What really gets me on this thread is everyone whose bleating has tried to get far more from this service that the providers claim to give . Woosh does not work in all parts of CHCH, and does not offer unlimited free Data usage . When woosh first fired up the CHCH service there was a full page map in The Press showing where it was expected to work well, and where it might only work with a booster . The woosh website clearly gives all intending users notice on how much data they can suck before the brakes are hit, and there is even an online "Is woosh available at my address?" facility .

Perhaps Alex would like to go to the woosh site and type the hotels address into this search facility next time to see if the system works rather than buying/renting/ or stealing some woosh gear and trying his luck . But he didn't and of course its wooshes fault that it didn't work well for him .

So where was this hotel in Merevale Alex? Lets type the address in to the search facility and see if it was ever promised to be workable for you then shall we?
