344153 2005-04-13 03:58:00 ... in the same country.

And what a wonderful country it is. I am going to be a citizen soon. Being here since '66 so it's about time I thought.

344157 2005-04-13 04:37:00 Well said Speedy .

What amazes me is so few people realise that there are no pure breed Maoris .

Not one .

The last pure breed Maori died some 60 years ago, so they’re all cross breeds the same as the rest of us . The Gene pool has been well and truly mixed .

As for Maori land, what they “owned” was on a day-to-day basis and depended not on Survey Pegs, but the manpower a tribe could muster to take some, or defend some .

And then there is the business of being indigenous . Well, by their own admission they came in Canoes and encountered a race, (the Moriori) already in residence .
Oh well, nice to have food in abundance .

So I guess it’s high time that all of us entitled to a New Zealand passport resign ourselves to the fact that we’re all crossbreeds and get on with working together and ceasing the bickering .

Personally, I think that if the Government offered $10,000 for anybody with Scottish blood, the great majority of Maori activists would be first in line .

I live in New Zealand . I am a Kiwi first and foremost . This is what counts not your race .
[Off the Soapbox]

Half of me is Welsh from my mothers side . The other is Yorkshire from my fathers side . I guess that makes me English . But you cannot "Choose" your birth can you? You get what you are given .

You CAN make a "Choice" about the rest of your life . I chose to come to New Zealand & raise kids . They have done well for themselves, from just sheer hard work . I also have grandkids born here, who I also wish well . They were al born here & are New Zealanders . I,too, chose to be a Kiwi thro Citizenship, signed off by one R Muldoon (Ok so don't blame him for that as well!!) .

The point ??? As the qoute says "I live in New Zealand . I am a Kiwi first & foremost" .

We arrived here in 1964 as Govt immigrants, bound for two years to the Govt . We did those two years & then left Govt employ with a clear conscience . When we arrived I Rated NZ as Fantastic, now I Rate it as Pretty Good . What has changed my thinking? The argy-bargy between different peoples; note, I did not say races, as in most cases there is not very much distinction in BLOOD from one person to another . Also the features of the original people, Moriori & Maori, & the "New" people have become distinctly blurred . So who then is Maori & who is European? Who the are New Zealanders? All of us who "Belong" here surely . Are there 'Some' who "Belong" more than others? How would one define "Belong" . Those with money, those of a particular skin colour, those not born in NZ? How?

It saddens me to see all this argy-bargy going on . I have no answer to it .

Consider that the Uk & NZ are of equal physical landmass, yet they have 75 million plus people whilst in the same sided paddock we have only 4 million .
How come there isn't enough of anything for everyone . When We got off our
Waka Canoe (the Southern Cross out of Southampton) in Wellington harbour
(no offence intended, just my arrival comparison) . We had just 10 NZ Pounds, 2 suitcases of clothes, 4 teachests of household goods & 2
toolboxes . Oh yes, we didn't know it then, one barely pregnant wife!! .
I worked hard & long . I paid tax . I had kids . I contributed to this country . I "Belong" here .

IF I can do it why can't everybody? Luck does NOT come into it . Just bloody hard work . Plus the obligatory heart attack of course .

Is there any ONE person out there who thinks I do not deserve my place in the sun, in my retirement?

I BELONG HERE . "I am of the land" that I helped to build . For good or bad .

Sorry for the RANT, I feel better now

from PJ, a very proud Kiwi .

344161 2005-04-13 07:27:00 I'm a 6th generation New Zealander and when asked for my ethnicity I put 'New Zealander' and if some pushy lefto fascist asks me for something other than 'New Zealander' I put 'Celtic' just to **** up their statistics. But my point being is that we are all Kiwis, and proud to be from Godzone, we should be bloody thankful for what we have here and in this land of free speech JT can say what he ****ing well likes and I don't give a toss! andrew93 (249)
344162 2005-04-13 08:08:00 As for other indignations, consider this: European settlers, over time, have given the Maori race: electricity, running water, sewerage systems, modern cooking
facilities, road transport, modern housing, social welfare.. the list goes on. I might have to check the history books, but I don't believe Maori asked for these things

From what I have heard (outside of this mainly colonial post) is that all that (most) Maori want; is an apology from the Crown, not money, not pity. They can't even get that.

As for me, part Italian, part welsh, mainly a Kelly; non Maori, but definately a(n open minded) Kiwi. Go figure
