342852 2005-04-10 02:03:00 I am not computer expert, I don't understand physical or theorical about dialup speed. I saw woosh's ads, then I joined them. I think they made a mistake in their ads about dialup speed. They are trying to cover it up by using what's called physical or theorical impossible excuse. netsurfer (7839)

They are trying to cover it up by using what's called physical or theorical impossible excuse.Asking what is normal dial up speed is like asking how long an unknown piece of string might be.

32kb/sec might be below avourage connection speed, but as Godfather said, there's packet errors and various other factors to into acount. 32kb/sec is probably about the equivelent of normal dial up speeds in practice, and 24/7 is a lot more available than dial-up, unless you have a dedicated dial-up internet phone line.

Either way.. you (hopefully) read the terms before you signed up? Well, why complain if woosh did exactly what they said they would do?

At least they're not charging for excess data usage, or turning the thing right off!

342854 2005-04-10 03:12:00 Please read woosh ads aloud,
"Up to 5 times the speed of standard dial-up
Download Design Speed 250Kbps**"

I don't know woosh lies about "dial-up" or the high speed "250kps". Can you tell me which one is fake? Please understand that I am not computer expert. If dial-up is 32kbps, then how can they reach 250kbps for broadband speed? or 250kps is just theoretical speed? It's not a good way to build up reputation.

Granted 32Kb/sec is not one fifth of 250Kb/sec, just the default speed for those who have used their quota. 32Kb/sec is however a typical dial-up speed.
There is no such thing as "standard" dial up speed. What there is is modems making the best of a difficult situation, and a whole heap of debatably irrelevant readings that make things appear constant if you choose to take them on board. transfer is what matters. Again "How fast is dial up" = "How long is a piece of string".

If dial-up is 32kbps, then how can they reach 250kbps for broadband speed? or 250kps is just theoretical speed? It's not a good way to build up reputation. One could often reach a lot more than 250Kb/sec if the brakes weren't on. The 250Kb/sec brakes are Wooshes choice, but there are some other bottlenecks in the system. This is why its a theoretical speed. Woosh have no control on the overall internet, or the quality content and speed of its millions of servers. Someone could for example be hosting a website from home via dial-up, you'd never pull 250Kb/sec of them.

A lot of ratings are just theoretical maximums, even outside of connection speeds. I have a 5.5Kw sound system at home, but if you drove it that hard constantly i would expect (hope for) it to shut itself down after a few minutes. Same with engine ratings. Its all the same deal really. The ratings only have meaning under certain context.

342856 2005-04-10 04:22:00 Threads which get onto the vexed question of "how fast is a piece of string?" tend to become a total waste of time very quickly. :groan:

As far as I can see, what has happened here is that a user joined Woosh, and was quite happy with it. The user then exceeded the "fair use" limit, and has had his speed cranked down as provided by the terms of service.

Tough. Be more careful next month. ;)

342857 2005-04-10 06:16:00 techie must be working for woosh, please try some dialup ISPs before putting any comment about what people can get from dialup connection .
I wish I was . I am currently with Xtra, and have been for most of my online days .

Can you read through the thread again? It's just not me that's telling you that you can't get over 56kbps (7KB/s) . Common Sense! How can you go over 56kbps if your modem only supports up to 56kbps? I DID NOT say that 32kbps is the most everyone will get . I said, 32kbps is the most many people in the country will get (including people living in urban areas, as I am and experienced when I was on dialup) . As sambaird said, his friend lived a block from the exchange, but got a poor connection . Why? Because his line may have been old . Just because you always connect at 56kbps does not mean that every other person living in a urban area will also connect at 56kbps . If you still don't understand, let me explain a bit further . . . just because you have a piece of chocolate to eat does not mean that everybody else in the world will be lucky enough to have a chocolate . Appreciate that you have a good phone line .

Before you reply again, have a look through here (http://www . rainbowreading . co . nz/) . P . S . What has anything I've said got to do with Woosh . I am talking about dial-up speeds . And isn't your first post just another rant about Woosh? You are no more intelligent than the lawyers who lost money to a Nigerian scam . Anyone with half a brain should know that wireless internet are new and still developing in the country . So, obviously, there will be quite a few faults around . Your own fault for choosing Woosh .

I'm yet to meet anyone who actually connects to the net with dial-up at the ideal connection speed of 56Kb/sec .

I have met people whose "connection speed" is reporting the fact they are using a 56K modem, but thats as close as it gets!
:D

342859 2005-04-10 06:54:00 obviously, techie has strong relationship with woosh. That is why you get so angry. Most of my firends are using dialup service can get more fast than what you said. In my experience, off peak speed can get 48kbps-50kbps. But woosh stays on 35kbps 24 hours 7 days in my case. netsurfer (7839)

342861 2005-04-10 07:09:00 I don't know why you interest in this topic, Techie. please set a new topic for yourself about your experience with woosh or dialup. I'm just telling everyone my experience with woosh. I don't know what's "wrong" with my computer software or modem line. But that's what information I can get about modem speed. davidakl (7837)
