Second Question. How can I find out iof Windows sees the 1 G of ram ?

648422 2008-03-15 04:59:00 PC100 or 133 isnt exactly fast.

Try defragging it. I doubt it'll run any faster (unless theres lots of crap running on startup). If you reformat / reinstall windows on it

648423 2008-03-15 05:18:00 Why do you need to do a reinstall is something broken, are you trying to reset Windows to its default state or....?

over the years crap just accumulates like that software for you old hp printer that runs in the background, a bit of spyware, some camera software, and all those toolbars etc you've slowly added over the years, plus some antivirus programs and the like take ridiculous amounts of resources compared to other, equally effective softwares.
my computer idles at around 350MB of ram, i've seen some idle at over 500MB:eek:

by the sounds of things this computer is simply getting too old and weak to run the newer software. more ram will help, but that and the price of any other parts you may later need will be so high it's easier and more economical to simply buy a new one

likewise, a reinstall will likely require drivers swampy doesn't have and may be hard to find.

I realise things build up of time. I myself have reinstalled Windows across a couple of machine for similar reasons. I was just asking if there was actually a problem with the Windows install or what, as the poster implied they would like to keep programs intact. Therefore whether a repair install or a clean install was what they were after.

648425 2008-03-15 19:14:00 Under System/ properties it says 512MB Swampy (2426)
648426 2008-03-15 19:45:00 Remove the old RAM and try inserting just the new RAM module and see if the motherboard detects it. stormdragon (6013)
648427 2008-03-15 20:09:00 OK Did that. Windows/ properties still saya 512MB Swampy (2426)
648428 2008-03-15 20:17:00 Even tho you said it was a Jedi system or something .

Is there a brand or model, or something etched on this mobo??

So, its got 3 slots? Maybe it can only go to 768 not 1 GB ?

What happens, if you put a 512mb and 256 mb stick in slot 1 &2 ??

How much ram does it show then?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
648429 2008-03-15 23:17:00 I have moved the ram around in the slots.
If I put a 512 mb stick in slot 1 and the same in slot 2, windows system/properties shows 512 MB

If I put a 256 MB in slot 3, system/properties still shows 512 MB

If I put a 512 MB stick in either slot 1, 2, or 3, each time system/properties still shows 512 MB

Whne I run PC Wizard, it sees the total ram, that is, if I have the 512 and the 256 sticks inserted, PC Wizard sees a total of 1280MB
