| 344144 | 2005-04-12 20:10:00 | So why is it people of Pakistani origin kick up a fuss about being called "Pakki". I don't understand why that word, which is basically an abbreviation of 'Pakistani', is so offensive and not-very-politically-correct. This may be just one example, but one could argue that certain minority groups have a knack of repressing the dominant groups and getting their own way. I myself is a Malaysian with the last name "Kan". Some time ago my dad receive a mail (just original mail, not e-mail) with his last name being spelt "Khan". Now, a person with a last name "Khan" is most likely originated from Pakistan or neighbouring countries. By confusing "Kan" and "Khan" is a some sort of insult to us. Keep this thread alive. Cheers :) |

First job of the new recuit will be to convince Mrs metla its a good idea. You fool Two woman in the same house is asking for five times the grief you can get from one. (x1 what you get now, x2 from the 2nd "wife", x3 having to listen to them bitching at one another, x5 haveing both of them take x3 out on you). :help: |

This allows me to respond to some comments. Mythix: "Considering some of the indignations US european have put Maori through in the past..." (Pete gets on his soapbox for a minute) What indignations? They have their own special Maori Affairs Dept (as opposed to the White People Affairs Dept, or the Greek People Affairs Dept) They have their own Maori TV & radio stations. I'm sure there are many other Maori-only benefits available to them that we don't even know about, but still pay for through our taxes. And that's not to mention things like the Maori Sports Awards (picky, I know, and they should be encouraging their race to excell) but even that is exclusive, given that we wouldn't dare have a Pakeha Sports Award, or a Samoan Sports Award or whatever. As for other indignations, consider this: European settlers, over time, have given the Maori race: electricity, running water, sewerage systems, modern cooking facilities, road transport, modern housing, social welfare.. the list goes on. I don't really mean this comment literally, but it's too early in the morning to express it better, but if European settlers didn't come here, modern Maoris would still be living in grass huts. (ducks the bullets) I don't believe in intergenerational guilt. Some Japanese guy shot your grandfather in World War 2? Boo hoo. Not the fault of a 20-year old guy in Tokyo. Your ancestors were ripped off by European settlers? Boo hoo. Nothing to do with me. You want to talk about mistreatment, talk to your local friendly Aborigine guy. It just annoys me when a small section of the Maori population complains about what their race has "lost" but conveniently forgets what their race has gained. Just sick of seeing Maori activists on TV with sunglasses & cellphones, whining about how downtrodden the Maori are. Winston001: "One answer is that Maori are regarded as a disadvantaged minority..." Winston, see the above reply. Jeremy: "Why isn't John allowed to only talk to people he wants to?" Jeremy, he isn't talking to only those he wants to, he's (no doubt with a prod in the back from Parekura Horomia) talking only to Maori media. He specifically pointed out a race. Only talking to your mates, or only talking to Labour Party members/MPs/whatever is fine. But to single out a race as exclusive is just wrong. |

No offense but to be accurate, nobody gave Maori anything . The colonisation of this country, as it was for India, Australia, America etc etc consisted of taking . Maori were overwhelmed by European settlers and their technology . They were also killed by European diseases . The Maori who survived became secondclass people in their own country . Children were punished as recently as the 1960s for speaking Maori at school . As a people they live and work beside the rest of us today . Aren't they allowed cell-phones? They are merely trying to keep their culture and ethnic identity alive . Wouldn't NZ be a pretty dull place if we were all one culture? |

Just sick of seeing Maori activists on TV with sunglasses & cellphones, whining about how downtrodden the Maori are . Hm, so let's see, you want you truly down-trodden not to buy sunglasses or cellphones, just to prove how down trodden they are . How quaint . As for other indignations, consider this: European settlers, over time, have given the Maori race: electricity, running water, sewerage systems, modern cooking facilities, road transport, modern housing, social welfare . . the list goes on . That could be said of any indigenous people who were colonised . That does not excuse or make up for genuine injustices done . And here's a little test you can apply at home . 1] Be Maori 2] Try and rent an flat in an upmarket neighbourhood . I wish you luck . I know people who have been told to their face that a flat has just been rented, only to watch a white couple walk in next and NOT be turned away . This happens all the time . I assume it happens in a world you are not a part of . Maybe you need a bit of real life experience before you develop such hard and fast opinions about the state of things in our gloriois country . |

| 344149 | 2005-04-13 03:32:00 | [On the Soapbox] A race issue that has always annoyed me is people with less than 50% of a race can call themselves a member of that race. What about all the other races that make up their genetics. Don't they count ? For me. I am 1/16th Jew, 1/4 German, and other races. I don't call myself, a Jew or a German. I live in New Zealand. I am a Kiwi first and foremost. This is what counts not your race. [Off the Soapbox] |

| 344150 | 2005-04-13 03:42:00 | I'm a NZ Maori, and 1/2 pom . And IMO both of them suck . Even tho I'm Maori, I dont really care, whether I learn the language or not . If I wanted to learn it, I would have, when I was younger . When I was younger, I went to a Maori access course . And they tried to force me into doing things like action songs, things like that . That wasnt the point of me going there in the first place . I went there to do a computer course . I refused to do things like actions songs . (just because they said so) . So, in the end, they kicked me out of the course . And I could have sued them but I didn't . And I hated them for it . And now, anything relating to Maori, I say NO . It just put me right off, anything to do with Maoris . So, as you can see, even Maoris who deal with Maoris can push things a bit too far . And the only way to fix this, is either someone quits, or someone gets the boot . An easy way of solving the prob . Not the best way, but it maybe the quickest . And as you've seen before with the marches Maoris have had, I wouldnt blame them . They had a reason to complain, because of the way they were treated . And they're still getting treated the same way now . And since things like this are still going on, I doubt that it'll ever end . So, Pakeha and Maoris are as bad as each other . One tries to dominate the other . It's just like a war, the only diff is its in the same country . |
