342842 2005-04-09 12:31:00 64k is max speed, if you use a software to test your dialup connection. you can find the speed goes up and down. The average speed will fall in between 56k to 64k if connection is good. Also what is the definition for dialup today? If woosh modem can not reach dialup speed, please stop telling everyone "the speed will be dropped down to dialup" ! wayne_no1 (7838)
342843 2005-04-09 12:46:00 techie must be working for woosh, please try some dialup ISPs before putting any comment about what people can get from dialup connection. davidakl (7837)

If you are getting a speed faster than 56k on a dialup then it is showing incorrect information.
It is not possible to get a speed faster than 56k using a standard phone line connection.

342845 2005-04-09 23:03:00 Woosh's ads say "Up to 5 times the speed of standard dial-up ,Download Design Speed 250Kbps**". As my calculation, they set dial-up speed to 50kps. Am I right? Please be honest in ads ! netsurfer (7839)

So, you think 32kps is max speed using a standard phone line connection?

What makes you think that.
I said it is not possible to get more than 56 k. Depending on your phone line condition some people are lucky to get 33k others may get 52k or more if all is in their favour but it is unusual to get 56k and certainly not possible to go above this.

342848 2005-04-10 01:18:00 yes it is, in my case i can get 115k but that is due to a incorrect driver. it still works though Prescott (11)
342849 2005-04-10 01:20:00 So, you think 32kps is max speed using a standard phone line connection?I have a friend in Punakiki who would kill for that sort of speed..... Any external dynalink "rural" modem got the connection into 2 figures... just. :yuck:

Sure, some people get 48ks/sec everytime they connect on dial-up, but most get less in practice.

If you want speed, get ADSL or Cable.

From what i can work out woosh would be good for anyone without a phone line.
I have a friend who lives in Chch well outside of even the officialy dodgy woosh zones. He gets perfect fast connections with the aid of a wee satalite dish he borrowed and modified.

I would consider woosh if i ever moved into my truck, but as i have a house with telstra phone, i'll stick with cable for now, thankyou very much!

Everyone appears to be quoting the "connect speeds", while the only speed that counts is the data transfer speed.

A 32 kbps (kilobits/sec) connection will transfer at a theoretical 4 kBps (kiloBytes/sec), which is actually quite reasonable in comparison to dial-up.

The reported connect speed on dial-up has no permanent relevance to data transfer in many cases, the modem may have to ask for many packets to be resent, or train down in speed for reliability if the connect speed is too high.
