| 648485 | 2008-03-11 23:06:00 | Ok redirector works fine, took me a little while to configure the redirect, but reading the instructions does tend to help | Morgenmuffel (187) | ||

It can make a big difference if you are on dialup as it resolves the DNS on your machine and doesn't have to use your ISP's sever. Add this line to your hosts file and then add the other addys. 210.48.100.45 pressf1.pcworld.co.nz |

| 648487 | 2008-03-12 08:56:00 | ...and doesn't have to use your ISP's sever. Right. But it won't change the problem, because the browser looks to the url. The different URL's of the forum make it necessary to log on at the other if you are following a link with another URL than the registered. Nigel intended to log on at only one and redirect all other to this one, so he will be registered at all. Mylin |

On dialup it is the time taken to load the web site that is more relevant. If you go playing around modifying your hosts file you are only building in trouble for yourself. For the average user it is best left alone. |

| 648489 | 2008-03-12 09:28:00 | Hello Nigel, for firefox is a addon called Redirector (addons.mozilla.org) availabel. Thanks Mylin, that's a sweet add-on. Some of the examples make a lot of sense and will save time which I'm well keen on. |

And as soon as your hosts file starts getting big, then a dns query actually becomes faster than parsing the file, thus rendering your point completely irrelevant. You will also find that most browsers / operating systems provide some kind of caching system in their dns implementation, thus removing any potential benefit from putting things in the hosts file. The hosts file is *only* intended for overriding dns results for specific hosts. Nothing else. |

For the average user it is best left alone. The whole point of the exercise for the original poster (Nigel) was nothing to do with the time it takes to resolve, but rather the 4 different base url's which potentially means you could have to log in four separate times by following different forum links! So his question was to ask if the host file would resolve that issue.... But it really needs to be done on the server side Rewrite file as both Bletch and Nigel have said previously said. |

It might also have something to do with my ISP's DNS servers. |
