343433 2006-01-24 23:13:00 Actually, its not just 1.6 versions that have 10gb HDD's. I have a 1.3 revision box and it came with 10gb.

Even 802.11b will stream movies fine.... Streaming DVD's probably using VideoLAN Client if you wanted :D

This may be of use:
thepiratebay.org

I quite liked running Linux on my Xbox. Meant I could use aMsn.... A mouse/keyboard are a great addition, and you can then play some basic windows games also :)

It also meant I could plug in my external HDD/DVDRW and use that :D

If you want it just for a Media Center, then just XBMC would suffice quite nicely :)

Do you use the 802.11b to stream to XBMC?
If so
1) What format videos do you stream or have had success with?
2) Have you ever streamed direct VOB files?
3) What cache values worked for you?

Reason being that I am finding video to be very choppy and I was concerned that it was because of my 802.11b versus 802.11g setup.

Thanks
Sharad

343434 2006-01-25 00:58:00 I have been doing xbox mods for a while now (with a modchip). Doing one right now actually. A special edition Halo console, looks mich better than a plain black one!
Never done a softmod mainly due to the fact I could never find one of the original games you need to load the hacked save game file.
If you want one with a modchip I could do it for you. I usually use the DUOx2 chips as they are cheap (but good!), compatible with all version Xboxs and can be turned off if you want to play on Xbox Live.

343435 2006-01-25 08:49:00 I havent done it using XBMC sorry, but I have done it using Xbox Linux just fine :)

I have however run it fine over 10MB Cat4 cables.... :D Ive replaced them now thou..

I use Nero Recode (Grab the CE Edition which is free from the Ahead FTP Server) for all my media files. It converts everything just nicely!
Standard with 2-pass encoding is all you need for DVD-Quality!!!

Yes, ive done VOB files, but only tried it over 100mbps CAT6 cable

I just leave the settings alone, they work... im happy... :)

Are you having specific issues?
Have you tried using an XNS Server from your desktop PC rather than samba shares?

343436 2007-05-17 09:47:00 sorry to drag up an old thread guys. i got me an xbox (i think its a 1.6) and all I want to do is get XBMC running at the lowest cost to me, all i want to do is watch movies/tv eps/listen to music on it. anyone know much about softmodding? ive had a look around but im a little confused about linux on it.

Else, ive seen a guy advertising duox2 chips for $80 installed in Papakura, i just heard that modchips can be dodgy at times, hence why i was keen to do the softmod. else does anyone do modding in the auckland region that i could pay them to do it?

343437 2007-05-17 17:58:00 Nah man, check out x-mods.co.nz for a local modder who does a good job.

You could always do it yourself, buy one from Vincent at x-mods from down the line and DIY with instructions from xbox-scene.com
$22 will have you up n running :) for $80 you could probably ship your xbox down, get him to Mod it, and ship it back!

BTW - Sharad, in case you ever come back, I use higher values for playing from the HDD, 4MB-worth I think? And lower for the network, 1MB does fine usually, even for h.264 files :)

Do you still do XBOX modding - I have one I would like modded.

343442 2008-02-17 22:41:00 360's come with the software in built. Just have it on the same network as some MS pc's and it plays anything you want. Plus if you get one, you'll be able to play GTA4 when it comes out at the end of april! And now, you'll probably get HD-DVD with it. Expensive, but worth it I think. Thebananamonkey (7741)
