342342 2005-04-07 06:51:00 A friend of mine sat with his 17 yr old daughter, giving fatherly advice: "It is not the bullies, cheaters and criminals that are going to be hard for you to deal with in Life.... it is all the STUPID people in this world!"

How true, how true.

Anyhow, as for the eclipse, is it still OK to view it through a piece of glass smoked with a candle?

Interesting. I heard the same quote on NewsTalkZB today.

342343 2005-04-07 08:57:00 Both of those are dangerous. People have been blinded by using them.
Some have and some have not.

If you read my reply you will note that I have used a photo negative to view a solar eclipse.

Crossing the road is dangerous so don't.

342344 2005-04-07 11:05:00 There's a good map, with times (at sunrise!), at www.rasnz.org.nz

From that website:

In New Zealand, the eclipse will be on the morning of April 9, when the Sun will rise partially eclipsed. Maximum eclipse will occur just after sunrise in most of the North Island, with Auckland seeing almost two-thirds of the Sun's diameter in eclipse and Wellington almost 80%. Maximum eclipse will be close to 6.50 am (April 8, 18:50 UT) with the Sun about 1° above the horizon. At Christchurch maximum eclipse will be at sunrise, 6.58 am (April 8, 18:58 UT) when the Sun will be just over 80% eclipsed.

The best New Zealand view will be from the Chatham Islands where at greatest eclipse about 92% of the Sun's diameter will be obscured. This will occur about 40 minutes after Sunrise when the Sun will be 6° above the horizon at about 7.38 am local time (6.53 am NZST).

342345 2005-04-07 14:57:00 I doubt I'll be able to view the website from the website. The picture changes every 1 minute rite?Well.Im on dialup and its been one minute and still the first picture hasn't even finish loading yet....!! :badpc: Ninjabear (2948)
342346 2005-04-07 21:12:00 Ninjabear - I use dialup and it works perfectly. The graphics change CONTINUOUSLY. - The website is the first one mentioned at the very top of this thread. Strommer (42)
342347 2005-04-07 23:08:00 A couple of US university sites recommend No 14 filters. (One page reminded me that you can make a pinhole projector for viewing the sun. That's even safer).

I don't want to minimise Graham's justifiable warning but we need to keep a sense of proportion.

The eclipse occurs at sunrise. At that point the sun's rays are attenuated through the atmosphere. The rays have to travel through a lot more air than when the sun is directly overhead at midday. Thus the sun's brightness is considerably weakened.

For example, consider how many of us look quite safely at a sunset. Think of all the sunset photos taken by ordinary cameras.

Use your commonsense and be careful.

342348 2005-04-07 23:43:00 It's dangerous crossing the street. Perhaps that's because too many car drivers have looked at the sun through photographic negatives or smoked glass. ;) (BTW, the - now considered irresponsible - film suggestion always specified "fully exposed to light and developed film" ... that is, not a picture negative, which is of varying density. Colour negative film, which is the only exposed, developed, film most people would have access to now was not included. ) Smoked glass has the very real danger that bits of the smoke smuts fall off with handling. Looking through clear glass is no protection at all.

I hadn't found the time of the eclipse before I gave that warning, but I would still have given it. You can't be too careful with your eyes. Repair is impossible if you burn out parts of your retina. Agreed, the early time will reduce the brightness, and the danger

It looks as if we're going to be protected even more if this weather holds. A solid cloud cover is a pretty good absorber.

But a welding filter $2.40 from George Henry is very cheap protection.

342349 2005-04-08 03:24:00 Cool, might get up at 1/4 past 7 and take a look. E|im (87)
342350 2005-04-08 20:50:00 Did anyone see the eclipse?

Thick cloud cover here in Masterton.

342351 2005-04-08 23:08:00 Thick cloud and drizzle in Upper Hutt, nothing to see, but it was quite dark during the period of the eclipse. Terry Porritt (14)
