What I'm trying to do is run Cat 5e/6 from one room to another. It's literally a straight vertical drop, of less than 4m. The current plan is to get Cat6 for the extra $4, but is it worth getting STP cables rather than UTP? It'll be in the same vicinity as electrical cables, but is STP overkill?

Another thing is the wall jacks. I'm planning to get this (www.lanshack.com), and use this (www.lanshack.com) plus this (www.lanshack.com) so i can use pre assembled cat6 cables inside the wall, but they won't ship $20 worth of stuff outside the US, and I can't find anything from a local retailer. this (www.acquire.co.nz) is the closest thing I can find, but it doesn't look like it's meant to go into a walljack. Is the thing I'm after sold here, or do I need to buy the length of cable and wire it myself?

Many thanks, xyzzy

649250 2008-03-14 03:12:00 I never liked Dick Smith ones, they are not great.

I get mine normally from a wholesaler, but Electrical Suppliers (Franklin, Fraser etc) sell them these days. HPM and PDL make them, but make sure you match up the wall socket and the wall plate as HPM and PDL fittings are different to each other.

You will also want a punch tool, not cheap but it punches the wires down into the wall sockets.

You can get cable also from electrical suppliers.

It is not hard, I ran dual cables through the house from ceiling down to most rooms in the house. All run to the garage and a patch panel there. all cables named both ends. from patch panel to the router, router to modem.
