346251 2005-04-17 23:06:00 There used to be, up near Warkworth or somewhere, a site with a number of radio telescope or satellite dishes (or whatever you might want to call them). Are they still there (its been a while since I lived up that way), and where exactly are they? Rough directions from Warkworth (or closest town), or, even better, coordinates would be appreciated :)

Also, I think there are probably others around the country. If you know of any, can you let me know where they are (coordinates for location would be great!) - I think there was some big communications thing down the south island somewhere too?

Thanks
Midavalo.

346255 2005-04-18 02:03:00 There's a communications listening station at Tangimoana which is on the coast of Manawatu. Although I frequently visit the beach there, I have never seen the station as it is well hidden and access is very restricted so I can't tell you it's configuration. There was a recent protest there by Rod Donald, Nicky Hagar et al. Dally (6292)

I'm pretty sure there are three, the original giant dish and two smaller ones. The same quality results can probably be achieved today using a dish that would fit on the roof of your house with heaps of room to spare.

The devil lies in the technology that accepts the feed from the dish! There are many separate channels.

Yep, Three (www.electrolink.co.nz) and this article has a good explanation of its current functions.

346258 2005-04-19 05:35:00 Hi Midavalo.
Warkworth
The historic village of Warkworth is the hub of the Kowhai Coast, which extends from Wenderholm in the south to Pakiri Beach in the north. Situated on the banks of the Mahurangi River, this pretty town is noted for its trees, particularly for kowhai. The township has some delightful cafés, galleries and craft outlets, and hosts the region's annual Kowhai Festival, a showcase of the region's wine, food, music and crafts. There are several nearby wineries on the road to Leigh, which also accesses the surf beaches of Pakiri and Omaha. The Parry Kauri Park on the outskirts of town has some pleasant forest walks. Of interest, too, is the Earth Satellite Station, 6km south of Warkworth, and Sheepworld, 4km north. East of the town is the Sandspit, where ferry services leave for Kawau Island, with its stately mansion. The town is within easy reach of Kowhai District's three regional parks – Wenderholm, Mahurangi and Tawharanui – which provide excellent boating, walking and watersports. Another good excursion is the historic settlement of Puhoi and its famous pub.
