346052 2005-04-17 12:56:00 Hi! Just some info I'll like to share, esp to those of you who download like mad and really dislike Telecom's data limits... Just some news I got from a source I shall not reveal.. LOL, got this information from an insider, and I tested it myself as well... By not switching off my router, I've done 40gb this month... And still going fast! So, do read this, and whether u believe it or not is up to you...

Here's the secret. Telecom limits speed, only according to "ip addresses". So, as long as you don't disconnect, and stay with the ip address for days, your speed won't be limited. EVEN if you go over the data cap.

Only when you disconnect, get a new ip address (cause they're not static), you speed will be limited. That's because, like I said before, speed is assigned according to the ip address, not the account.

You can actually see this, when u check your usagemeter. Each different "ip address" you get, will show up as a different data portion on the usagemeter for the month....

Anyway, hope that helps for the heavy downloaders! I'm not sure if these extend to Ihug, Orcon, or any of the ISPs on UBS

*Disclaimer* 40gb was in part due to heavy use of internet telephony and not soley due to downloading

346053 2005-04-17 14:59:00 40GB from Telephony?

Here's hoping thats Video also, as Skype averages 11-13KB/s out/in total......

Interesting theory though :)

What nonsense. Friend of mine hasn't disconnected since he hooked up - (and I checked) and he is limited all the time.

346058 2005-04-18 01:13:00 hhhmmm i heard the exact opposite yesterday, when my mate reached his limit and was capped, he turn the router off and then on and he wasnt capped for a few days..... mind you that still sounds like a heap of rubbish.

ive read on the net somewhere, (could of been on that anti-telecom fourm) that this guy got 100gb in a month and wasnt capped....

just be greatful that you have jetstream..... i dont have it, not to mention i cant even get it in my area :(

346059 2005-04-18 03:06:00 They don't limit your speed by IP (that would just be stupid), but from the RAN server by your Username/Password, this has always been the case with limiting the speed.

However the speed limit changes won't take affect until the User logs in again, which is why it would seem that keeping hold of your IP would seem like the reason why it doesn't affect you, the real reason is because you're still holding your current session which doesn't have these limits. Another thing, keep spreading this around and eventually Telecom will resort to forcing IP renewals in smaller time limits in which case, you won't be able to avoid it.

I don't know how many insiders information I've heard that try for clever guesses thinking they know how it works, maybe they should look more into how login processing works, how RAN servers authenticate the user/group and gives them an IP and their session settings , etc. I have never worked for an ISP but at least I know what equipment they use and how their software works.
