Double posting!

Is this board running on an overclocked server?

345972 2005-04-17 10:10:00 Awwwwww, shucks . . .

All this time I was thinking Windows was unstable, prone to malware, bloated, inflexible, overpriced and ruled by a litigious multinational, when in fact all this time it was the user's fault for having overclocked hardware, according to this article ( . com/news . ars/post/20050412-4804 . html" target="_blank">arstechnica . com) from Ars Technica .

What is interesting is a suggestion that PC buyers may not realise that their CPUs are overclocked, and that small, no-name bespoke PC builders do this moreso than big brand-name builders . I don't know about this, because most BSODs I have seen were mostly brand-name machines .

Oh well, if it is true, then I will thus only consider Windows to be prone to malware, bloated, inflexible, overpriced and ruled by a litigious multinational .

By the way, is there a way to tell if a machine is overclocked without opening the case? Has anyone ever checked for overclocking before buying a PC?

345973 2005-04-17 10:21:00 I suppose I could be considered a "small, no-name bespoke PC builder", possibly even Metla (not that I consider him such) and I certainly don't do any such thing.
In fact my warranty says in words to the effect that if they overclock it causing h/w failure it voids the warranty. I recommend they don't.

I think its a bit of spite really. Conspiracy by big "brand-name" PC sellers.
Why would smaller PC shops want to even bother?

And Windoze is quite a screwup on its own without helping it. Come to think of it, this article is probably propaganda by MS.

345974 2005-04-17 20:52:00 Back in Pentium days when chips were relatively much more expensive, there was even overclocking by way of cpus being marked up by Asian third party vendors with higher ratings than the original.

Then there was also the fake cache chips scandal by Edge Computers, whereby they knowingly sold motherboards that had dummy "place filler" memory chips soldered into the boards. They were caught out and prosecuted for that scam.

345975 2005-04-17 22:36:00 Its not widespread but still goes on, There have been many reports of AMD cpu's being overclocked and sold as a better model in the last couple of years, There are also a number of places that overclock/flash the bios of video cards and sell them as a higher model.

No idea why but the majority of these scams seem to be on the UK market, then of course you get the performance systems that come overclocked (some of the Alianware and other high end competitors)

There was also a shop in Levin (i think, they may have been purely online) that were making a big issue about how their systems were killer because they came overclocked. Made me wonder how they intended to cover any warrenties.

I personally am no fan of overclocking,it makes more sence (to me) to just buy gear that can do the job (though I have been known to ramp up the clocks on gear thats getting long in the tooth and is ready to be replaced,Personal gear only of course)
