344985 2005-04-15 03:44:00 I don't know how many of you are following the sorry saga of the NZ Berryman farming family who were blamed for the collapse of a bridge built on their farm, resulting in the death of a beekeeper who was crossing it in his vehicle.

The Berryman's lawyer Bob Moodie has uncovered a report that was covered up by the Army who built the bridge improperly, and the government who helped to sweep, and are sweeping it, under the carpet. This report was neither presented at the coroner's inquest nor at the subsequent government inquiry.

The consequence of this blatant thuggery is that the Berrymans have lost their farm, worth about $2.4 million on today's market, and lost their physical and emotional health during the 5-year legal battle which cost them an additional $450,000 in legal bills. It turns out it was not their fault but the NZ Army's fault. The Army lied - simple as that.

The NZ government have offered $150,000 compensation to the Berrymans. Nice isn't it?

If you're interested in emailing/faxing your member of Parliament, have a look HERE (http://pc.blogspot.com/) for more info and MP contact details.

If you'd like to download and disseminate the Berryman Report itself, you can get it HERE

By defying the High Court's request to return all copies of the report and posting it on the internet, lawyer Bob Moodie has put his own career on the line. Already several sites and links that had referenced the report have been closed down, presumably by the bureaucratic steamrollers.

The Berryman family deserve better than this. Anything you can do to help is immensely appreciated! It's election year and they'd better listen.

Thank you.

344990 2005-04-15 09:43:00 If you are into tramping, then you will know that for years now, the Berryman case has affected access over private land.

Because the Berrymans were held liable, other landowners have used the excuse of "OSH" to deny access to trampers where previously access had been granted.

There is an increasing amount of public land being locked up behind private land, a situation also being made worse by overseas non-citizens, non-residents, buying up extensive properties.

Thank god there are men of the calibre of Bob Moodie around.
