344756 2005-04-14 05:27:00 Greetings PressF1, currently I am learining molecule bonding. I was taught that there are only single- , double- and triple-bond. So, how about SiC? Silicon has 4 valence electrons and same thing goes to Carbon. Does it form quadruple bond then? Cheers :) Renmoo (66)

344758 2005-04-14 06:07:00 Silicon carbide, a widely used engineering ceramic, for heat resistance and as an abrasive in sharpening stones and grinding wheels ("green wheels"), used to be used for grinding tungsten carbide tools in lieu of diamond wheels.

This site would seem to answer your question James:

www.uncp.edu

though there are also quite a few more sites that explain the bonding mechanisms in ceramics.

344759 2005-04-14 06:26:00 Tetrahedral covalent bonding:- "each carbon atom is surrounded by four silicon atoms to which it is covalently bonded. Each of these silicon atoms, in turn, is surrounded by four carbon atoms to which it is covalently bonded." Terry Porritt (14)

344761 2005-04-14 07:58:00 I wonder is it possible to explain the way it is arranged using Lewis Diagram? Cheers :) Renmoo (66)

What a cue Graham, Ok then, The music goes round and round...........

We never, afaik, studied Lewis diagrams at school, there is some info here:
www.ausetute.com.au

But the only Lewis I really know about is Ted Lewis, which gives the excuse for another old tune:

Duct tape is better, it holds the universe together, got Apollo 13 back from almost certain disaster, and will probably take the petrol caps off aged BMW motorcycles as well.

Cheers
