344517 2005-04-13 10:13:00 Matthew Thomas, a New Zealander working as a designer for Ubuntu, has a blog (mpt.net.nz) where he recounts his experiences with the latest Ubuntu release.

This is personally why I do not like bells-and-whistles distros that you have to spend ages trying to reconfigure and clean up, and prefer completely bare-bones distros that I can build up myself.

344518 2005-04-13 10:30:00 Already posted on the "linux in the mail thread", any chance you can post something linking him to being a designer for Ubuntu? Metla (12)
344519 2005-04-13 10:45:00 At the end of his whinge he states that his boss is the boss of connical and he is an interface designer or something.

344520 2005-04-13 10:48:00 Yeah, I read that, and followed the link to the "bosses" site, It doesn't say anywhere that this blogger done any work on Ubuntu.....

Just sounds like a whinger to me.

344521 2005-04-13 10:56:00 It wouldnt surprise me at all if this is the type of man who writes instructions on how to use toothpicks. Sam I Am (1679)
344522 2005-04-13 11:01:00 You have mised the point totally.

To have an insider write a (constructively) critical article on what is the fastest growing linux distro, and therefore a showcase for desktop linux, is a refreshing and honest departure from the usual fan-boy propaganda. Most of the criticisms are not fundamental or technical, so they would appeal to the desktop crowd. If Ubuntu can address these criticisms, and all of them are eminently addressable, then they surely deserve their somewhat exalted status.

344525 2005-04-13 11:29:00 barrow?

I merely asked a question, As far as I can see he works for Canonical, which is owned by Mark Shuttleworth, who are putting a fair amount of resources into Ubuntu.

Nowhere does it state that the blog writer is a designer on ubuntu, Infact I would seriously question his views based on what he is trying to achieve on a personal/professional level. Writing an article that critics the work of others in the same workforce as himself and then submitting it to the big cheese for inspection before publication?

Dodgy.

That aside, he merely whinges a lot, I gave up reading his complaints after a couple of dozen, Thats not to say he doesn't have valid points, Just that he is looking for every little nook and cranny that doesn't meet his personal views/criteria.

If we all done that we could pull apart every program ever made, and it would still be nothing but reduntant lists....

Yes, Canonical created and continues to create Ubuntu. Canonical is the company, Ubuntu is the name of the distribution, much like Ford is the company, Falcon is the name of the car.

No. Honest and constructive criticism. Very very rare nowadays in Linux, which is discouraging and sad to see. That an insider expresses them says volumes about the confidence, unselfishness and honesty of Ubuntu. Have a look at their "mission statement".

If you have any serious concerns over the authenticity of the author/blog article, or any points therein, write to Mark Shuttleworth or contact Ubuntu/Canonical. Follow the links on the blog.

You should have read the whole article. That's why you have totally the wrong impression. Maybe a background on the true linux culture of peer-review would be of some help.
