Some modems get upset and disconnect, when that happens the phone will ring with the incoming call. That is not the intent of Call Waiting, just an effect that sometimes happens. If the modem survives the continuous "beeping" every few seconds and remains connected you will never know a call is there. Some V.92 modems with the correct driver under XP may detect the "beeps" and display a message that a call is waiting, you can then ignore it or terminate your internet connection and the call will come through. It is not always accurate in detecting though, it needs good compatability with XP and all hardware. Or, you can buy a device that plugs into the phone line and it will alert you in the same manner. No ISP in NZ offers the ability to "hold" the internet connection open for you, you will have to disconnect if you take the call. Meanwhile, the person calling just receives a ringing tone, they have probably given up thinking nobody is going to answer. They have no idea that you have call waiting. |

| 344233 | 2005-04-12 13:48:00 | It is not a plug. It is a hardware device. A "Caller Alert" from Dick Smith Electronics, Catalog XH6837, $44.94 www.dse.co.nz |
