2005-05-27 22:19:00 | How is it racist for Indonsia to try foreign criminals exactly the way they do their own? Recently 2 Indonesia womaen were shot for drugs. One elderly too. Everyone is watching this western young female cry and saying she is innocent. How you can tell that from watching a few news reports I don't know. The one I thought was interesting was the first report where they interviewed customs. They searched her bag because of her behaviour. Normally being nervous and paranoid about a piece of baggage is a fair indication there is something naughty in it. And she didn't get shot nor did she get life, both of which are common sentences there. Its funny, on the one hand NZers bleat on about us having tougher sentences but when another country locks up a foreigner for a long time theres heaps of weeping and wailing. I've been to Bali and I thought the large bins just before you go through where interesting. The ones that say place any banned stuff in here now before you go through. Well she had her chnace.

2005-05-28 07:44:00 | And 90% of Aussies believe her? 90% are suckers. If you wanted to smuggle some, why pick someone at random when tons of people are willing to do it for a small fee? And how do you retrieve it at the other end? Rush up and mug her? Break into her hotel room? Seems a bit of a risk that you'd attract attention. And even if you did, wouldn't you want to split it up? 50/50 the courier gets caught, well there goes the whole packet, better to have several smaller packets? And also a boogie board bag? A nylon bag containing a flat hard object. Then you pack in all this plant material. I'd sure notice if I then collected the bag off the baggage thing that it didn't feel/look right. And she didnt? Guess crying and looking pretty works huh.

2005-05-28 08:18:00 | This unfortunate young woman has raised some interesting issues. The Australian news media and bulletin boards are awash with cries of "shes innocent". The Indonesian justice system is trashed and everyone rushes to believe she was set-up. Nothing the Indonesians do will be good enough. There is a simple maxim of logic - Occams Razor (after Sir William of Occam) which says - The most straight-forward answer, however difficult to accept, is likely to be the right answer. So Shapelle had 4kg dope in her bag = she knew it was there. But why would you take marijuana to Bali? Because it was hydroponically grown and worth a lot to Aussies there. And because an associate grew it so it didn't cost anything to buy in the first place. But isn't that a stupid risk? Not if friends have already done the same thing. Besides, why would Indonesian customs look for drugs coming in from Australia? Going out is their main concern. And they welcome Aussie tourists, so where is the risk? Particularly if you are a young white and attractive woman. Just bat your eyelids and smile. Whoever said that all drug smugglers were smart? People do stupid things, and get away with it. Shapelle denied the dope was hers. Criminals always do. But in fact many criminals confess. So maybe the denial is consistant with innocence. But a customs officer states she said "I've got some stuff" while stopping them from opening the bag. Oh dear. This statement is denied by Shapelle. The dope was planted by a baggage handler in Australia. Her bag would be snatched once she left the airport. Possible - in fact this could be exactly what happened. But how do you prove it? This theory requires a conspiracy of several people in two different countries. There is a chance the truth would be blurted out by someone somewhere. Corby's defence tried this theory but had no substantive evidence to back it up. The mere fact that such planting of illegal items has happened in the past is no proof that it occurred here. If this young woman has been wrongly convicted, then that is a terrible thing. But the histrionic racist reaction in Australia against Indonesia is appalling. The Indonesians use a French/Dutch judicial system. It may be different from ours but not much. Besides, this is an open and shut case. The evidence for beyond a reasonable doubt is overwhelming.

2005-05-28 08:26:00 | Girlfriend and I once hitched a ride from Spain to the UK ( after we botched a booked fare) because she was pretty and crying about loosing her job and it worked. (I just stood around pretending to be invisible but hopefull). Really dunno if we human beings will ever evolve past the priorities of looks. And if some consider it sexist, well what about all these XXs going nuts over a Brad Pitt or a Leonardo deCapuccino? Bit of a puzzle really. Still think 20 yrs for a bag of dak is riidicuolous. When I got nicked in Indonesia the motivation for the police was that the people (foriegners) I was getting it off were moving in on their patch. Very hypocritical of the Indonesain police/Judiciary to get so heavy on foriegners when they know that part of the tourist dollar the country benefits from is exactly the cheap dak available. But of course hypocrisy is as univeral as the suckerdom for good looks. HTH....m

LAW says no drugs, doesn't distinguish between types, regardless of what opinions users might have. Its not hypocritical at all. They recently shot two Indonesian women for drugs, one fairly elderly too. There are 3 sentences basically: getting shot, life (real life not our version) and 20 years. So she actually got the light sentence. The aussie government is mad interferring. Wait for the rush of bleats for help from the next lot. The paper this morning said theres another 104 aussies in various asian jails for drugs. Not to mention its insulting the Indonesian judicial system. How would they react if it was the other way around? |

2005-05-28 09:50:00 | I reckon it's hypocritical for the same reason I gave above - the touro-dak-dollar is a big deal for Indonesian tourism and OK you and others have ponted out big penalties for Indonesian dealers/users who have got busted but you haven't said what they got busted for. For the Indonesian Govt / Judiciary to get righteous about this just sucks. The "powers that be" in that country (and I spent a very enjoyable 3 months there, ( 2 as a guest of the govt)) are promenading themselves as a force against drug consumption but also know that the the country makes megabucks out of (particulatly) Australasian visitiors who use the cheap dak. And that's hypocritical. | mark c (247) | |
2005-05-28 09:57:00 | dunno if this's been mentioned but to try to import 4kg of weed in such a ridiculous way, virtually unconcealed, would be tantamount to suicide considering the potential of a death penalty......I CANNOT believe that ANYone would be so stupid.............thus I dont belive that shiela did that | drcspy (146) | |
2005-05-28 10:20:00 | Yeah my point in part too drcspy. Why take something where you can sell it cheaper? Who knows? Will we ever know? My experience of 2 months in an Indonesian prison for possession of 28 grams has left me with an appreciattion for Indonesian people and culture. Ironically it's been a gift. And I still think 20 yrs for 4kg of wacky bak is stoooopid.
