A civilised society should be above that sort of thing. I think "certainty" would have to be the key word, and certainty is not something we get when most of the evidence is coming from those whose job it is to convict people. There is a bias from the truth that has been shown where police or prosecution slip up and police evidence that has perhaps kept someone remanded in custody for many months is thrown out of court because it lacks substance or credibility. :groan: Obviously a death sentence should not be imposed without a complete and skeptical look at the convicting evidence. personthingy (1670)
345258 2005-04-19 11:21:00 Looks as if Aussie diplomats are going to be busy with 9 more traffickers picked up in Bali. Male & Female this time with Heroin. B...... Idiots.

Firing squad at the ready. Don't expect they will be wasting Oxygen much longer.

0% recidivism = lower prison population = more tax dollars available for Hospitals etc. Bad idea?

345259 2005-04-19 11:33:00 Several Aussie news sites are awash with messages saying that the Federal police should have waited until they were back in Oz before arresting them so that they might have had the wet-bus-ticket punishment rather than execution for heroin smuggling. Most of these messages carry a hidden view that folk in Oz do not think much of the Indonesians. Now if a couple of say Italians had similarly been arreested in Bali with heroin....... Should we squeal if a couple of Kiwis were similarly picked up with heroin bodybelts ???
( and I'm against capital punishment, by the way ...)

345260 2005-04-19 11:35:00 They've had it.
At first I thought hmm, serial drug-planters targeting Westerners. But then I read they had the stuff strapped to their ankles. No case really.
If they're hardcore druggies then good riddance.

Personally I am against the death penalty due to the way the law works (if no obvious suspect pin it on the person whom they have the best chance of convicting, then make the argument suport their guesswork),however stupidity deserves to be rewarded, and if they are so retarded as to traffic drugs in such places then they fully deserve to be punished in the countries they were acting unlawful in.

I know very little about the current case but I will bet that the people arrested have very little to do with the drug business . The people at the top don't run around with small quantities trying to smuggle it .
The ones arrested will be couriers trying to make a few dollars for themselves .
The ones at the top probably never even handle any of it . Perhaps never even see it .
There's plenty of idiots around to do the dirty work .

345265 2005-04-19 20:54:00 There's plenty of idiots around to do the dirty work.I dought if they are working for anyone organised. My bet is they are just plain opportunists who took a chance and lost the bet. The amount of heroin that could be shipped in the back of box#827 export order #175 is somewhat larger than what could be strapped to someones ankle walking through customs. All that is required is the right people in place to intercept box#827, and Sydney gets enough smak to last its junkies for another day, plus a few well placed people just added a few zeros to their life savings. The chances of pinning it on anyone are somewhat lower that way to.

These guys are going to pay the ultimate idiot tax.

345266 2005-04-19 21:35:00 At least the aussies have done the right thing and let the Bali goverment bare the cost of there imprisonment, although it could be a short stay if found guilty plod (107)
