648932 2008-03-14 02:51:00 - Microsoft have always said a clean install is better than an upgrade when going from Xp - Vista - Causes less Problems.

Indeed it was a clean install.
I started from scratch and re-installed all my programs and data in a fresh Vista only machine.
It was absolutely not installed over XP.

Thanks very much for all your help and suggestions...they are very much appreciated :thanks

I guess a reformat was always in the cards, but I was trying to avoid that. :(

Perhaps I'll wait for SP1, and if that doesn't help ...Ill re-install Vista from scratch. :badpc:

648935 2008-03-14 04:37:00 Sorry if it seemed I was implying you were withholding info. A misunderstanding.

It is also relevant that the machine was OK to start with. Yep, it looks like a re-install is the only sensible way to go.

Let's hear how it goes. I am sure it will be fine.

Just sorry I couldn't help - It Pis**s me off a bit to let "software" get the better.

BUT some times you also have to know when to say - enough, reinstall.

What I'd suggest is do the reinstall ( unless someone else has a fix) and after adding in the drivers, then make a new account ( or add in additional accounts at the time of creating the first one).

648937 2008-03-14 07:16:00 Wouldnt hurt updating the BIOS.

Thats if you want to, just remember to update the chipset drivers, if you do (it says this on the ASUS site).

Since yours (according to what you said is 1011). Which is 3 versions behind whats on the ASUS site.

Thats if you dont count the current beta, which would make it 4.

Thats if the mobo is just a A8N-SLI

Thanks for that tip .
I guess I'm not really technical so I'm not sure how to update the BIOS

648939 2008-04-23 09:30:00 Do you still have this problem?? If so here is a fix that worked for me

Here's how to fix that annoying black screen on boot:

Click on the Start button (pearl? ball? orb?).
Type "Task Scheduler" and hit Enter.
On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."
You're done.

Thanks for your suggestion.
I do indeed still have the problem (even after downloading SP1) but unfortunately it made no difference. :(
