346041 2005-04-18 05:00:00 Hi Beetle. Re: and yeah i hope i dont lie either........ I do. Constantly. To grandchildren, to adult children, to friends who produce the most atrocious handicraft artifacts, to fellow card players as a matter of course and much more. I help out teaching at SeniorNet - lies encourage the most useless elderly voters to keep trying. The truth would switch them off completely. Sorry, (no I'm not) but it makes the world go round.

black is white and white is black...never the twain shall meet... and my instinct honed over several generations makes me believe that no one can possibly believe that.......

346042 2005-04-18 05:07:00 Beet - the first rule is to tell the truth. Sometimes this can be painfull, but in my experience results in less guilt, as well as respect from others.

Nevertheless, when someone says "How are you?" they aren't actually wanting to know all your problems, emotional, medical, personal, financial, and work. It is a courtesy question.

Instead, you say "Fine".

If you insisted on being truthful on all occasions then you would end up having very long frustrating conversations with shop assistants, bus drivers, the milkman as you tried to evaluate every question and give an honest answer. Which you would then be required to justify.

However I think your question is a bit more specific. What type of white lie are you not telling???

346044 2005-04-18 05:22:00 Maybe I do lie a little, but you can be fine with conditions that you will not discuss with others.

I'm going to ask the next couple of strangers that ask me how I am if they realy give a stuff whatever I was going to answer.

346046 2005-04-18 06:26:00 How many of us have been on tramping trips, either as leader or group member, and people in the group are pretty exhausted. What do you say (or expect to hear) when someone (you?) asks the immortal question "How far left to go [to the hut] [to the camping ground] [to the road end] [out of the b.... weather]?

The immortal answers are:
1. "Nearly there", and/or
2. "Just around the next bend".

Invariably those are leetle white lies.

What would you prefer to hear? An encouraging lie, or the discouraging truth? I guess it depends on how far away from the desired goal the leader starts lying... A pragmatist? Moi?
