| 346418 | 2005-04-18 11:15:00 | The German City of Munich, which refused the upgrade path from Windows NT to 2K to XP and opted to go Linux, has settled on Debian as the distro to power the city's administration infrastructure, as detailed in this article (www.zdnet.com.au). I think this is the first important domino to fall, and so does Steve Balmer, who interrupted his skiing holiday in a vain attempt to dissuade the Bavarians from going over to the free, open source side. Microsoft have been trying to push software patents in Europe, and this move makes it unlikely that the Germans will vote such a thing through. Other cities who have already, or are contemplating the move include Vienna, Austria, and many South American cities. | vinref (6194) | ||

| 346420 | 2005-04-18 13:01:00 | I would think that they would be custom-building dpkgs on one/few machine(s), stress-test them out, and then install them on the desktops when it is absolutely stable and secure. That's the way I would do it. No way would I even consider building from source on each and every machine. I don't think they should install gcc on any desktops at all either. The kernel should be cut-down to the barest of the bare minimum - for efficiency and security reasons. I wonder how they would observe the Debian Free Software Guidelines (www.debian.org). |
