649970 2008-03-16 19:00:00 Is an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 3.2GHz quad core cpu worth the price?

I currently run Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800, 2.93GHz, LGA775.

As I understand it most programs do not use more than two cores so in effect I think I will just be stepping up from 2.93 GHz to 3.2 GHz.

$2300 seems a hell of a lot for a cpu.

Also if I step up from a 1300 FSB to a 1600 will ther be a noticable increase in performance.

Computer is used for running MS Flight Sim X in multiplayer mode. With the arrival of ORBX more power would be very helpful.

Any comments from those "who know" would be very helpful

649971 2008-03-16 19:06:00 There are still programms which are optimized for Quads, but why you want a new CPU?
Which applications don't run well, with this CPU?
Run your CPU @stock?

FSX is very cpu intensive. More so than most apps.

I've seen comment in the past that unless you're getting a 50% increase the difference isn't worth it. It would be different if FS was quad core aware.

$2300 seems a hell of a lot for a cpu. Shop around you should find the exact same thing Cheaper.

649976 2008-03-16 23:51:00 FSX isn't quadoptimized and a X6800 should be enough.;)
Why you don't overclock the X6800, imo that's the only reason to buy the Extreme Edition->open multiplier.

Because The fsb and multiplyer on my P5B-E motherboard are locked and can not be altered,

And I don't know enough to realy try.

No, the Qx9775 @ 3.2Ghz wouldnt be worth it @ $2300, however the Q9300 @ 2.5Ghz and $450 would be, especially since these are on 45nm process and clock on air to 4Ghz!

I doubt it's locked set in concrete. Most motherboards by default lock CPU overclocking, but look around - your multiplier and FSB should have an option that lets them to be unlocked.
