| 347809 | 2005-04-23 06:37:00 | Can someone offer an explanation for why when I find that spending some of my Airpoint Dollars, I am charged considerably more than if I was paying by cash or credit card. I know that the accomodation we booked would have cost us $100 per night in cash, but on enquiring through Air New Zealand about redeeming Airpoint Dollars, that the same accomodation would cost $150 per night. We are led to believe that our Airpoint Dollars have the same value as cash when redeeming for travel or other rewards, so why the extra 50%? Is this an issue for the Commerce Commission? | rny (6943) | ||

Did you book online or did you call them ? If you did call them they charge something like $25 dollars . On the website they have this statement.. Please Note: Air New Zealand hotel stay redemption prices may differ from cash rates offered by individual hotels and resorts outside of the Airpoints programme. With any of these reward type things it always pays to read the fine print. because they always seem to hide extra fees etc. |

Car hire, hotels . . . . . . . . . . . nah, still a "flat rate" At least you were charged only $50more . . . I had an extremely unplesant experience with them before . I tried to book a return companion ticket, and I had to call 6 times!!!! And everytime, I had to wait upwards of 30mins . . . . . RIDICULOUS! And in the end, after 6 different explanations and the customer services rep telling me that they'll call back when they find out the solution to why they can't help me book, it turns out that . . . . When you book a reward ticket, the return journey might not be priced the same as the outbound . . . Because of currency fluctuations . . . They admitted that this was their inexperience though, and gave me an unconvincing reason why I had to try six times, it was because the Airdollars system was "New" . . . . Still, no compensation at all . . . . I have since decided that I'll never ever take Air NZ again, and I will pretend my points never existed . . . I'm that angry . . . . |

Accomodation was booked through the Air Points page online, after speaking to a person at Air New Zealand on the phone and having her tell me that there would be a $25 surcharge for a phone arranged reward redemption. She also told me that the cost would be greater than if we had just gone and paid cash. I still don't understand how this is above board, regardless of what the fine print says. Still, at the end of the day, it was my choice to use my Airpoint Dollars, as we are about to have some drop off the bottom. | rny (6943) | ||

Might not be fair, but something for spending normal money on your credit card is better than nothing. I guess there's always the ability to convert your points to Flybuys, isn't there? Personally, I avoided airpoints and travel schemes like the plague. I went with National Bank visa where the reward was 1% cash back on total spend over an entire year. Much more satisfying and much more freedom than an airpoints system, I think. Lo. |
