347926 2005-04-23 11:37:00 Probably more to the point is why, when they issued zero policy statements to staff on the issues way back, they didn't set up some form of auto scanning system to intercept it as it happened? Why wait for a giant expose rather than catching the problem on an on-going basis with technology? This would surely have reduced the problem.

After all, as they are largely staffed by males it is fairly inevitable that such stuff makes the rounds.

I would also have thought that allowing anything and everything to be opened on work computers in a large organisation is asking for trouble due to the sheer range of computing skills. eg vast numbers opened the love letter virus and brought systems down world wide.

347927 2005-04-23 11:54:00 Most interesting . About 50/50 . So far as we know, the objectionable pics are email attachments . Some will be short video clips .

So this isn't a case of 326 officers (including a few Ms Plods) surfing and deliberately downloading the stuff . It is received from outside - from the general public .

Apparently there are about 30 items which might be unlawful . I don't have much sympathy in those cases .

But the emailing of naughty photos - often photoshopped jokes, occurs throughout the world . Not everyone forwards them of course but then not everyone buys those glossy sealed magazines .

Is there any real harm being done? Certainly we should expect high standards from the police, but girlie pics being emailed seems ordinary enough .

Remember, we currently have a Government which has legalised prostitution and now funds sex-change operations - in Christchurch at $30,000 a pop .

Perhaps these are good decisions but it must be hard for police officers to know where the moral boundaries are anymore . We live in a society where there are very few limits .

347928 2005-04-23 11:55:00 Yes Mercury, but I think the technological solution is seriously flawed. You add more detection programs you need more HDD space faster processors more RAM to keep the system up to speed. And the "solution" only lasts until someone gets around it by using some other method. I see it as a dog chasing its tail and you make the dog bigger but the tail doesn't get any closer. mark c (247)

Maybe they could ask IBM to setup such a system for them...... Yeah Right

347930 2005-04-23 13:10:00 Speeders get snapped, fined and made to pay. Cops were told of the policy on email and internet usage, ignored them, got caught out and now the rules are supposed to be different?

Then there's this einstein who claims he only viewed Rachel's boobies and you'll see worse at the mechanic's, what's the big deal and misses the point entirely. Boy, do I feel safe with him looking after the general public.

I think Ninja, deserves the prize for teaching us the meaning of succinct.

347933 2005-04-23 21:59:00 One group of winners in this situation is the System Admin team. Bet all around country in various government departments they are suddenly finding more free space on their email servers :p Jen (38)
347934 2005-04-23 23:01:00 Hi Jen,

Not sure if the System Admin people ARE winning at the moment . The extra space is probably counterbalanced by the bosses asking IT staff to spend time setting up filters and checking files themselves .

As bosses tend to think "it's a computer problem and we hired you because you know everything about compters" it's probably cutting into their free time figuring out how to do it and giving them a lot of stress explaining how they "overlooked" such a "simple" problem in the first place .

347935 2005-04-23 23:41:00 Simple, lock em down to text only email.

And fire the ones who think rules only apply to the public.Always a hard case to see how the fuzz get along in the real world, hey, we need more second hand car salesmen.

As for system admins and free time?

Whats that about?...they expect free time at work?
