| 346679 | 2005-04-20 11:23:00 | 12 hours to go now, No skin off my nose, with a bit of luck it will continue to gather pace and be done in time for me to take it to work and have a play. | Metla (12) | ||
| 346680 | 2005-04-20 21:25:00 | Linux plays nicely with the intel chipset 865, allthough i'm not too shure about onboard video. You might want to try a distribution like Yoper as well, their community is excellent online and best of all was started by a New Zealander |

| 346681 | 2005-04-21 02:00:00 | Yoper is good, but its too "cutting edge" and stuff breaks sometimes because of it. Im going to give SimplyMEPIS a whirl tonight (didnt get the chance last night) and we'll see how we go. Im over Ark Linux for the home user... no good. My family are used to Xandros though, and when I offered to install one of my year-long WinXP trials, they politely declined!?! |

| 346682 | 2005-04-21 11:17:00 | Making this post from mepis (god thats a crap name, nearly enough to uninstall the bugger. Bad points (only used for 20 odd minutes) Far to many programs. Fonts make me want to dig my eyes out with a rusty fish hook colour scheme is pretty bad,and seems to have infected firefox as well (purely a cosmetic issue, but that will be the first issue i look at....which is better then my first issue being no audio, stuck on 640 x 480,dead nic....yeah Ubuntu up the mangeti, I'm talking abou you)... I also noticed that many of the firefox themes for download are Windows only, I feel like a discriminated minority already....I wonder if that makes me eligable for extra health funding... Good bits. Loaded up as a live cd,and then gave the choice to install to HD, This is an excellent idea.Partition manager was suitably simplified as well, though i just bulldozed on through Found drivers for most things, though it didn't correctly identify my video card (so i couldn't select the nvidia driver) but it did load a driver that enabled a high res then 640x480 Other bits. If I keep it then Im going to have to rip the guts out of her, I do not want all those apps, nor all that crap in the system tray (constant weather updates my naked arse, I can tell what the weather is like, Im not deaf, dumb, blind and buried) Fonts will have to be fixed, color scheme ripped out,set on fire and driven off my property, then I guess the media side of things will have to be looked at.... hmmm....just noticed an CD/DVD burning icon, wonder if they made a Linux version of DVD Shrink. |

You can probably get something that won't scare the horses too much from within KDE or from KDE Look ( . kde-look . org/) / KDE Look Mepis (http://www . kde-look . org/content/search . php" target="_blank">www . kde-look . org/) / KDE Look Mepis (http:) . Configure the fonts in KDE as well . BTW, is it too early to email Mepis . org re oem versions, maybe they'll slim it down for you and customise it for ya, taa daa Metla Linux :D |

Currently I am running Mepis off a secondary HD in my home comp, novelty has near worn off, Might have to jump back into Windows for a few rounds of counterstike.... |

| 346686 | 2005-04-21 12:08:00 | Give me a few mins and I'll throw Mepis in myself Sounds great, but like you I find those same gripes with many of todays distros, and more. What you need is Gentoo, but I doubt you or many/most would be willing to spend the time doing just that. Im off to boot Mepis |

| 346687 | 2005-04-21 12:57:00 | Im actually loving the 'iced' style theme. Not a fan of plastik-based themes though.... keramik all the way. Fonts look beautiful on both my LCD and my CRT. 1024x768 fine :) Not bad, but some applications are just begging to be removed! ..just because a CD is 700MB doesnt mean it has to be full ! |

| 346688 | 2005-04-21 20:17:00 | Tried a variety of the distros lately, Ubuntu (Kubuntu), Fedora 3, Mandrake 10.1, Novell Desktop, Suse 9.2, RedHat ES 4, etc. Was really impressed by the Suse distros (Novell & 9.2), in the end settled on Suse 9.2. Family accceptance was good, even the 8-year old took to it like a duck to water. On the hardware front I couldn't get any of the distros to work with my Tosh M2 WLAN, and on my old Tosh Satellite the Suse/Novell pair came out tops with regards to display, sound and hardware support. It even offered Nvidea drivers for download during update time. |
