347622 2005-04-22 11:14:00 well twice we have had those Damn automated dialers ring us . . . . . . .
and twice someone has called us, answer machine picks it up, only to hear other side transfer our call to someone else in the building only to hang up!

One thing I want to do when they call is either

Caller: Would you like to take our survey?

Me: I'm a little busy now, if you leave me your home number, can I contact you when I am not busy?

if they say they are not allowed to give out their own numbers or something to the like . .

Me: NOW YOU KNOW WHAT IT F***** FEELS LIKE! - then slam the phone down .

Also

Now how many of you guys own your own business?

How many of you have been called up by someone at home from some charity group/WorldVision type group even though you didnt give out your number to ANYONE?

Ever ask them where they got your number even though its not listed in the phone book, to which they mumble?

Now you know how my parents feel!

They owned a successful takeaway shop and got calls from Charity/WorldVision type groups "thinking we were wealthy" .
Whenever we asked how they got our number they mumble .

Now if it were the other way we would be the ones getting charged for nuisance calls . :annoyed:

347623 2005-04-22 11:35:00 I'm usually polite in my reply - these guys are after all only messengers trying to earn money to feed the cat (or whatever) due to lack of other work opportunities.

But I also feel that if you buy something, give something or answer something, it just encourages their bosses to think that as this is a method that works then, hey, lets do more of it!

There was one major exception to the politeness rule. Suffering from a really nasty dose of the flu a few years back I was woken mid morning by someone asking if I needed help planning my retirement. He sounded highly offended as he got the last word in before slamming down the phone.

347624 2005-04-22 20:26:00 Their timing p***es me off, always seem to call around dinner time when we are in the midst of preparing or eating . I don't like cold food . . .

The worst one I had was American Express, they just didn't get the not-to-subtle hint that I'm not interested in their card . The calls went on for months before they eventually gave up .

Luckily we have an answering machine with caller ID, so ALL calls are now screened . Caller ID's of "Private" goes unanswered, and they usually all hang up as soon as the answering machine picks up .

347626 2005-04-23 03:19:00 pctek - Does this mean you got a phone call too? Or is this just a better answer?

Anyhow, first question still not resolved - spam or scam?

347627 2005-04-23 04:01:00 I have a standard reply to all these parasites . The ones that invariably start off, "Hello, my names So & so and I'm ringing on behalf of__" . That's as far as they get . I, very rudely tell them to f*** off before I come through the line and kick the s*** out of them . Then I slam down the phone .
Probably doesn't do much good, but it makes me feel good .

347628 2005-04-23 04:26:00 Hi J*. Might make you feel good, but could leave you open to Cort actions.... Clause 100 re-enacts without change section 8 of the Telecommunications Act 1987 ("the 1987 Act"). This creates an offence when, using a "telephone station", a person:
"uses profane, indecent, or obscene language, or makes a suggestion of a profane, indecent, or obscene nature, with the intention of offending the recipient."

347629 2005-04-23 04:36:00 What about the caller "with the intention of offending" ME. JJJJJ (528)
347630 2005-04-23 04:59:00 if they didnt want to be offended, they shouldnt have called in the first place

Or you could always try to chat them up.
So.. and what are you wearing... should guarantee no return calls hopefully
